The biggest takeaway from game action of this summer’s quarterback competition in Miami is that the Dolphins are going to need to do a better job of protecting whoever winds up winning the job.Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen both faced a lot of pressure from the Falcons defense in the first half of Thursday night’s game. Fitzpatrick had a couple of scrambles to get out of trouble and Rosen did a nice job evading pressure long enough to hit wide receiver Preston Williams for a 16-yard gain Christian Wilkins Miami Dolphins Jerseys , but Rosen was also sacked twice and new offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo will need to find some answers in the weeks to come.Fitzpatrick led the Dolphins to a field goal and a punt and Rosen led a touchdown drive in his first action of the summer, but his second drive was much less successful. I feel robbed. The Week 8 Sunday Night Football game was supposed to be the back-and-forth shootout reminiscent of last season’s 54-51 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football — MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes going against former MVP gunslinger Aaron Rodgers. All at Arrowhead Stadium under the lights. The game should still be a good one even with the absence of Mahomes — but with the NFL scheduling method Khalen Saunders Jersey nfl draft , this may be the last opportunity for the Chiefs and Mahomes to face the soon-to-be 36-year-old Rodgers. I have five things to watch as you take in this game: 1. A changed game planPhoto by Dustin Bradford/Getty ImagesThere is speculation about whether Mahomes will be able to play or not. The team is being ambiguous about the situation — so I am going to go off of the initial report that says he would be out multiple weeks. That sets up backup quarterback Matt Moore to make his first start as a Chief. I don’t think it would be smart to roll out the same type of game plan they have been using for Mahomes this year. The strategy has been very pass-heavy. The Chiefs lead the league in passing yards and are seventh in pass attempts — while also being 25th in rushing attempts and yards this season.The lack of rushes has been chalked up to playing to the team’s strengths and the usage of RPO plays. When you have the MVP at quarterback, the likelihood of making big plays and scoring is much higher when throwing than handing off — especially with a banged-up offensive line that may not be able to create running lanes consistently. Head coach Andy Reid has cited that the RPO plays may be contributing to the lack of rush attempts as well. It has been up to Mahomes to read the defense on the field and he has elected to pull the ball and throw quite a bit. Those reasons have to go out the window now. Moore should not be put in a position to have to read the defense on an RPO play as consistently as Mahomes was. There should be more traditional runs. We may see fullback Anthony Sherman more this week to help with that. The passing game should consist of quick throws and more designed screen passes. Moore should be able to execute the game plan as long as Reid molds it to fit his substitute signal-caller. 2. Continuing the success against the runPhoto by Matthew Stockman/Getty ImagesAs a Chiefs fan, the Thursday night victory over the Denver Broncos had to be an encouraging sign for the run defense. Yes — you can blame Denver for playing terribly — but the Broncos came into the game averaging 116 rushing yards per contest and were held to 71. That was also the lowest amount the Chiefs had given up in a game this season. The exciting part about the performance is that the improvement was visible all across the front seven. The interior defensive line was excellent, as it maintained the line of scrimmage and controlled the blockers. Second-year defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi was praised for his performance after a rough first half of the year. The linebackers played significantly quicker in terms of filling run gaps. Anthony Hitchens had just returned from injury and made a difference — but it was his fellow linebacker that may turn out to be the key. Linebacker Reggie Ragland played the most snaps of his season and was a huge factor in the success of the unit. They were seemingly in the base 4-3 defense more often to counter Denver’s tendency to run — and Ragland looked great getting through blockers and making plays. With the Packers ability to spread out and throw, it will be interesting to see how Ragland is utilized in Week 8. The Packers have not had to rely on running the ballbut have been very effective when they choose to do so. Running back Aaron Jones has 399 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground this season — four of which came against the talented Dallas Cowboys defense a few weeks ago. They will also use running back Jamaal Williams: he is averaging 4.6 yards per carry this year. The Packers want to win on the arm of Aaron Rodgers — but if they are missing players in their receiving corps, they may try to take advantage of the Chiefs run defense that has looked bad for most of the season. Something to keep an eye on: Packers starting center Corey Linsley did not practice Thursday. The Chiefs’ defensive front needs to play well once again and show that the Denver game was not a fluke.3. Pass protectionPhoto by Ronald Martinez/Getty ImagesFor as injury-riddled as the Chiefs offensive line has been lately, it has performed admirably in the past two weeks. It did not allow pass rushers J.J. Watt or Von Miller to sack its quarterback — even though both of those players were coming in playing well. The good news is that starting left tackle Eric Fisher has started to practice in a limited capacity this week — but the bad news is that the Packers pass rushers have been exceptional this season. Edge defenders Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith have combined for 13 sacks this year. Za’Darius Smith is in the top five among edge rushers in total pressures this season — and Preston Smith is not far behind at 13th on that list. The duo was brought in together via free agency in the offseason. While Za’Darius has mainly been used against the left tackle, the two are flipped quite frequently. The edge rushers are dangerous — but Green Bay is disruptive on the interior as well. Defensive tackle Kenny Clark has also been productive this season. He has the fourth-most total pressures out of all interior defensive linemen in the NFL. The fourth-year stud is coming into his own — and will be a big challenge for a shaky interior offensive line group for the Chiefs. Watch to see how the offensive line handles this Packers front. It will be a great opportunity to prove that their recent performances were not lucky. 4. Stopping Aaron RodgersPhoto by Quinn Harris/Getty ImagesThe Packers have been winning all season — but it felt like Rodgers was not getting much of the credit. His statistics had been underwhelming. He had not delivered many crazy plays to win them games. He had started to look more human than he has for most of his career. Then he played the Oakland Raiders last week. Without his best wide receiver Davante Adams Eric Murray Jersey , Rodgers came out firing early and often. He finished with 429 passing yards and six total touchdowns. He made some incredible throws, and there were multiple deep passes exploiting bad coverage. He finished with a perfect passer rating of 158.3. The challenge will be for all levels of the defense. The secondary may have an advantage if Adams misses another game — but it did not matter for Rodgers last week. The linebackers will need to be sound in zone coverage to take away the threat of tight end Jimmy Graham in the middle of the field. The pass rushers will need to disrupt the rhythm of Rodgers; He had a clean pocket for a lot of the Raiders game. Look for the pass rush to build off of its nine-sack performance against the Broncos. The injury report will need to be closely monitored: Edge defender Frank Clark has missed two practices with a neck injury — and defensive tackle Chris Jones is still being held out of practice with a groin issue. 5. Rookie impactIsaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY SportsOne of the most encouraging parts of the victory over the Broncos in Week 7 was the contribution from the 2019 draft class.Wide receiver Mecole Hardman has been a big part of the offense all season — but his early touchdown catch showed both great focus on the catch and speed. Safety Juan Thornhill continues to play well and showed a few good reps coming up on the run and helping stuff it. Defensive tackle Khalen Saunders had the best game of his young career, helping Nnadi control the interior of the line of scrimmage in the run game. Cornerback Rashad Fenton stood out with a few plays at the catch point in crucial situations. He seemed to always be right on his man even if the ball was caught. All of these rookies continue to be relied upon throughout the season. Saunders will once again be heavily involved if Chris Jones misses another game — and Fenton will be asked to play in the slot once again if starting cornerback Kendall Fuller is not recovered enough from his thumb injury. He’s been voted to the Pro Bowl as a returner in each of his first two seasons in the league and is likely to make it three for three this year.As much as the Raiders have focused on slowing down the Chiefs‘ high-octane offense this week, trying to prevent Hill from breaking loose on special teams has been an equally big emphasis.“He’s an unbelievable athlete and he’s somebody we circle on the calendar every single year. Not only him but that team in general,” Townsend said. “We’re going to do everything we can to limit his returns and try to flip the field.”Saying it and doing it are often two different things, especially when it comes to the Raiders this season.Hill is sixth in the NFL with an 11.6-yard average this year. Coutee’s rookie season began and ended with brilliant performances against the Colts that garnered attention throughout the league. Due to several lingering hamstring injuries, Coutee was sidelined or limited for most of the season. Now with a full offseason and time to heal under his belt, the expectations are high for him to immediately impact the Texans offense. Neither Will Fuller or DeAndre Hopkins are present at OTAs currently, which means that Coutee and QB Deshaun Watson can spend this entire summer working on their chemistry. If you go back to watch the Colts playoff game (which I do not recommend for your health as a Texans fan), watch how the Texans manipulate the Colts’ defense with Coutee’s motion and speed over the middle. In that game, they both laid the groundwork for a 2019 season primed for a high-octane offensive attack. Coutee will be playing in the role popularized by Wes Welker and Julian Edelman in the New England Patriots offense. In this slot receiver position, Coutee will become Watson’s safety valve, an elusive diversion in the backfield, and a linebacker’s worse nightmare. Here are the routes and concepts that Coutee is mastering to take the next step in his game.Juke or Option RouteDepending on the offensive system or what you’ve heard it called in the past, this route is a staple of the slot receiver’s arsenal of plays. This route has three principles 1) timing with the quarterback 2) coverage by a linebacker 3) quick decision making by the receiver. Similarly Cullen Gillaspia Houston Texans Jersey , there are three options available when running the Juke route. And Keke Coutee has displayed all of them.Option 1: The SitWhen a slower defender such as a linebacker is faced with a slot receiver, they have a tendency to overplay the route and react poorly when the receiver approaches quickly. This play is a guaranteed five yards when the receiver reads the defense correctly.In this play, Coutee watches as the linebacker indiscriminately drops back into zone coverage and does not close the space between him and Coutee. Once Coutee realizes the defender’s coverage, he quickly turns, squares up the the QB, and finds an open area to get the first down. The best part is Coutee’s ability to flip his hips and get almost 10 yards after the catch.Option 2: The OutWhen the linebacker is bracketing the slot receiver to the inside in man coverage, the best option is to dart outside into the flats for an easy five yard catch. Going where the defender is not is the name of the game.Coutee comes back to the ball for about two yards to guarantee the catch and distance himself from the defender. He does an excellent job of not revealing where he is going until he is as close to the defender as possible. This forces the defender to either stop moving their feet or guess which direction they are going. On this play, the defender stops moving his feet which gives Coutee enough space to make the catch.Here is another version of this route by Coutee.Option 3: The Juke The lesser-used of the three for Coutee, this option takes advantage of two high safeties with slow linebackers over the middle. The goal is to work up field to find an open area while remaining in the middle where he is easily found by Watson.Since Coutee doesn't know when the ball will be thrown to him, he has been taught to run one way and face the QB. He physically contacts the linebacker because at this point Coutee will be able to outrun the linebacker in a short distance every time. It takes years to understand NFL defenses and where they empty parts of the zone are, but here he does it quite easily and moves the chains for the Texans. With this one route and three options, Coutee could make a living off of picking on slower linebackers and soft zone coverages.The Drag RouteFinding Coutee in the middle of the field will become a norm for Texans fans for several years to come. What is great about the drag route is it’s a short yardage route that can be the check-down option for the QB in his progression reads. Aka, its an easy route that solves a lot of problems. This route is best paired with either another drag route on the opposite side or a pick route such as we have here. Griffin does a great job getting in the way of the other linebacker and the pursuing corner to give Coutee tons of space to run.As Xfinity says; Simple. Easy. Awesome. Its not that the route takes elite skill to run, but rather it requires trust in the QB-WR relationship to know where each other are and This play can easily get a receiver clobbered by a linebacker who can read a QB’s eyes. In the clip below Cullen Gillaspia Jersey 2019 , this is Coutee’s first game back. Because Coutee has barely worked with Watson and they have yet to improve their timing, Watson stares down Coutee before the throw. Once they spend this summer ironing out their timing, plays like this will become second nature to them.The Jet SweepWe’ve seen several wide outs come through this offense and find marginal success running this play. What none of them do better than Coutee is go from a full sprint facing the sideline, to working up the field, to reading blocks, and making people miss.Nothing irks defensive coordinators more than the lack of discipline in reads that are created by successful jet sweeps. Coutee is eye candy on a jet sweep and cannot be disregarded. Especially if we have quick lineman who can get out and block downfield, this play works well against all defenses. Plus, it inflates the QBs passing numbers with good YAC.Vision is key for this play to work. Yes quality blocking can make or break this play, but if the runner cannot find a hole this play turns into a zero yard gain.The Ghost MotionIf there is a better name for this route, I could not find it. Willingly will tip my hat to anyone who can verify if this is the correct name of the route or has the right one on hand. This long developing route can take on several forms, but at its core is a devised to create misdirection in the backfield. When timed properly, this route looks like a potential jet sweep and forces the defense to over-pursue before the ball is snapped. Once the play begins, Coutee’s job is to disappear... and reappear in the flats with the ball in his hand. The Texans to my knowledge first used this play with Cecil Shorts, but found better results when running Bruce Ellington as the ghost in the backfield. Now Color Rush Cullen Gillaspia Jersey , with Coutee, they’ve made it a recognizable part of the Texans playbook. Here is a pretty famous version of the play.With Coutee as the third option, he seemingly can become a “ghost” with Hopkins and Fuller streaking across the field. With so much going on each play, having a designed outlet for Watson where the defense purposely takes their eyes of the receiver is a great concept for the offense.Coutee may not run the entire route tree, and that is okay. The Texans have yet to experiment with running Coutee deep (probably due to the hamstring issues) that Texas Tech did when he was there. This offseason may be more important to Coutee’s development than that of just about everyone on the roster. Save for D’Onta Foreman, Martinas Rankin, and the Jordan twins, Coutee could have the greatest leap from 2018 to 2019. Expectations that the Texans would use the franchise tag on Jadeveon Clowney were realized on Monday when the team announced the move a day ahead of the deadline to use it.With that out of the way, the two sides now have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal and Aaron Wilson of the reports that such an agreement is “not close” to happening at this point. That’s not a great surprise as recent reports indicated the Texans were happy to have Clowney play out the year on the tag and that deadlines tend to spur action on the contract front.Given how franchise tag situations tend to play out, it’s also no surprise that Wilson reports that Clowney is not expected to sign the franchise tender anytime soon. Wilson adds that Clowney isn’t expected to take part in any offseason work with the team either and that missing training camp could also be on the agenda.Clowney stands to make at least $15.967 million under the tag as that is 120 percent higher than last year’s salary. That’s higher than the tag for linebackers, but below the defensive end tag of $17.12 million and the Texans listed him at both positions when announcing the tag.

It was a tough ask for Ryan Finley to keep up with the most exciting offense in the NFL in his first career start Geno Atkins Jersey Limited , but that’s what the Bengals needed from the 24-year old rookie quarterback. While Lamar Jackson was solidifying his MVP case, Finley gave the Bengals a few promising plays in a performance that mainly mirrored what the offense got from Andy Dalton all season long. The numbers weren’t great. Finley finished with 167 yards on 16/30 attempts with a touchdown, interception and lost fumble. The Ravens scored on both of those turnovers. Looking at them on a per-play basis, Finley generated an Expected Points Added per Play of -0.6 and an Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt of 3.91. The individual moments that stand out paint a picture filled with contrasts. Finley’s 16-yard scramble at the end of the first quarter got the offense in range to get their first points of the game. His movement ability in general was a bright spot. Like a young Russell Wilson, Finley was able to buy time on multiple occasions with a backwards spin and keep plays alive with his legs and keeping his eyes down the field. In the pocket, Finley’s subtle ability to adjust off of his first hitch and create a more optimal throwing lane showed up in his longest completion of the day. And the touch on his touchdown toss to Tyler Eifert validates that strength of his coming out of college.But that’s about where the praise stops. That touchdown wasn’t the first of the game involving Finley. When targeting Alex Erickson on a five-yard out from the far hash, Finley’s pass ended up in the hands of Marcus Peters, who proceeded to run 89 yards for a pick-six. Not only did the ball take an eternity to get to Erickson Dre Kirkpatrick Jersey , Finley stared down the throw the whole way, two things that has always plagued Finley long before he got to Cincinnati.As the game wore on, Finley’s pocket presence started to fade. He took his first sack of the game in the third quarter and fumbled on the way to the ground, allowing Tyus Bowser to scoop it up and run it back 33 yards for the Ravens’ sixth touchdown of the game.
