LAS VEGAS -- Jordan Davis tied a career high with 25 points, grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds and had seven assists to help Northern Colorado beat Sacred Heart 81-59 in the Las Vegas Invitational on Thursday.Davis, a sophomore, has scored at least 20 points in each game this season. D.J. Miles, a junior college transfer who had scored seven total points this season, hit five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points -- both career highs. Jonah Radebaugh added 14 points, hitting 4-of-5 3-pointers.Northern Colorado (2-3) opened the second half with a 23-2 run to open a 60-38 lead with 11 minutes to play. Davis had nine points and Radebaugh added eight, including two 3s, during that stretch and the Bears led by at least 19 the rest of the way.Quincy McKnight led Sacred Heart (1-4) with 11 points. The Pioneers, who have lost three in a row, shot 22 percent (6 of 27) after halftime.UNC made 31 of 62 from the field, including a season-high 54 percent (13 of 24) from 3-point range. The players spoke Jan. 13 during a Major League Baseball Players Association conference call after Rodriguez sued the union and Major League Baseball to overturn an arbitrators decision suspending him for the 2014 season and post-season. *This column contains spoilers. While watching episode three of Pitch on Thursday night, there was a particular part of the shows plot line that caught me completely off guard. It wasnt the bench-clearing brawl started by protagonist Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury), or the fact that the St. Louis Cardinals catcher was Bakers former minor league flame -- it was the depiction of Bakers San Diego Padres teammate, Woo-Jin Kim.Woo-Jin is first seen in last weeks episode as a player sitting on the Padres team bus. My initial reaction to seeing him, even just as an extra body used to portray another teammate of Bakers, was a smile -- there was an Asian-American ballplayer, something I never recalled seeing in a movie or television show, ever.As an Asian-American myself, the only representation of Asian athletes in movies or television from my generation came in the form of Isuro Kamikazi Tanaka from Major League II (1994) or the Japanese team that got bounced by the Purple Cobras in Dodgeball (2004). Oh, and we cant forget Olympic ice skater-turned ice hockey stud Kenny Wu from D2: The Mighty Ducks (1992). Otherwise, from my knowledge, thats about it.However, Fox decided to take Woo-Jins storyline down a disappointing path. Viewers quickly learn that he is an international player after being the butt of a you cant even speak English joke from characters Mike Lawson (Mark Paul-Gosselaar) and Blip Sanders (Mo McRae). The language barrier becomes a crucial part of the episode as general manager Oscar Arguella (Mark Consuelos) wants to send him down to the minor leagues, but doesnt initially communicate his thought, because Woo-Jins interpreter cant be reached -- despite the fact that the Padres are in the middle of playing a game. You would think the interpreter would be present for such an occasion, but ... Hollywood. After a bit of head-scratching throughout the episode as to why the players native tongue is constantly referenced, the answer becomes painstakingly apparent at the end of the episode. After Oscar spends nearly 35 minutes searching for an interpreter, it turns out that skipper Al Luongo (Dan Lauria) spoke Korean all along (what are the odds!). After delivering the news to Woo-Jin in broken Korean, Woo-Jin responds by saying Okay before bowing and walking away, likely never to be seen on the show again.Al then leans toward Oscar and says, People who underestimate me tend to be surprised.Really? In summary, Woo-Jins character on Pitch was created for the sole purpose of a punchline and a plot device to further highlight the complexity of Padres manager Luongo -- because an aged, seemingly Caucasian baseball manager speaking a foreign language apparently causes heads to explode.Heres why there is a problem with Woo-Jins portrayal on the show. In a Hollywood-climate where Asian-American actors and actresses continue to fight for visibility in the form of booking lead roles, the depiction of him as the inaudible foreign ballplayer, who is the butt of jokes and a pawn for plot lines, is yet another setback -- as minor as his role is on thee show.ddddddddddddFor a show that screams social consciousness and has done a great job in not only casting diverse actors but showcasing that diversity in the form of a black manager (Cardinals manager in episode 3), female and minority reporters, and diverse front office personnel -- all of which Major League Baseball desperately needs more of in reality -- Fox completely dropped the ball when it came to Woo-Jins character. While its the goal of Fox to inspire all genders to take up the sport of baseball, it missed an opportunity to shed light on another population that is underrepresented in professional ball clubs. I can probably count the number of Asian-American ballplayers in the majors on two hands.?While it could be seen as an unfair expectation of Fox to break every barrier in Hollywood, its disappointing to see they missed the mark with Kims character. Its also not to say that the depiction of an Asian-American ballplayer would have been unrealistic. Major Leaguers like Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong and former San Francisco Giants first baseman Travis Ishikawa both played huge roles in the 2014 National League Championship Series. Was it wrong of Fox to use an international player in the show? Absolutely not -- international players have been some of the games bigger names in recent years. But the network shouldnt have done something as ridiculous as making Kims interpreter go MIA in the middle of a ballgame. In fact, in the real world, Major League Baseball implemented a new rule in 2016, requiring all teams to hire two full-time Spanish speaking interpreters to their clubs.Writers could have instead shed a small light on the struggles international players face -- there are sure to be similarities between their experiences and Bakers. Look no further than Tuesdays American League wild-card game where racial slurs (and a beer bottle) were hurled toward Orioles player Hyun Soo Kim, who happens to be a Korean outfielder. Before you draw the pitchfork, there is also the character of Elliot (Tim Jo), an Asian-American who serves as the social media managing sidekick to Amelia Slater (Ali Larter). Elliot, who is funny and energetic, is one of the more likable characters on the show. And of course, in the middle of Oscars interpreter scramble, he comes running to Elliott wondering if he speaks Korean, not before acknowledging how awkward and uncomfortable that request is. There is nothing controversial about Elliot, and his solid casting is not the problem at hand -- the portrayal of Elliot and Kim are mutually exclusive. No, this hiccup by Fox does not mean viewers should stop watching Pitch, the storyline is far too important and the networks execution up until this point has been commendable. This particular case simply shows that Asians in television and film, no matter how progressive the project, have a long way to go.Sean Hurd is a Digital Media Associate for ESPN. WACO, Texas -- The former Title IX coordinator at Baylor University says that a top school official told her to never put anything in writing after she sent him a 16-page memo detailing her concerns that her authority and support were still being compromised even as the university had indicated it was trying to make changes in the wake of a series of sexual assault claims.Patty Crawford told 60 Minutes Sports on Showtime that Reagan Ramsower, the universitys senior vice president for operations and chief financial officer, yelled at her in July after she wrote the memo. The segment aired Tuesday evening. He was not happy. And -- I was shocked. I was yelled at. I was told, `Dont ever put anything in writing to me again. You talk to me in person. You call me on the phone. But dont put anything in writing, she said.Ramsower told the television program that Crawfords claim was a complete fabrication.Ramsower said he had 12 meetings with Crawford in the five weeks prior to when the memo was sent and that she had not raised any of her concerns to him.David Garland, Baylors interim president, told 60 Minutes Sports on Showtime that he found Crawfords accusations that Ramsower was impeding her efforts to be untrue and also unfair. ... We have spared no expense in trying to address these issues. As Title IX coordinator, Crawford was charged with enforcing federal standards meant to prevent discrimination based on gender. Her job also included investigating the sexual assault claims. An outside investigation of the Baylor University sexual violence scandal found 17 women who had reported sexual or domestic assaults involving 19 Baylor University athletes since 2011. Those included four reports of gang rapes. The investigation by the Pepper Hamilton law firm in Philadelphia found some players were alleged to have participated in a series of assaults over several years.Baylor has previously said the review found that the football program operated as if it were above the rules.Coach Art Briles was fired earlier this year, as was the athletic director. President Ken Starr was removed from his post by regents and he later resigned as chancellor.Crawford also told 60 Minutes Sports on Showtime that she was denied access to police reports about various complaints that women had filed alleging sexual assault and abuse. She said that when she tried to get Waco police reports she received an email from a university vice president telling her that police do not want the actual police reports turned over to Title IX. Crawford said she could be apprised of what was in the reports but that the reports were off-limits.Ramsower said one of the reports by university police about an alleged gang rape in 2013 involving two football players stayed with the police department. That was -- that was a significant failure to respond by our police department. Theres no doubt about it, he said.Ramsower said the individuals within the police department who failed to notify him about these reports of sexual assaults are no longer employed by Baylor.Garland apologized for how victims were treated.I am so sorry that we did not treat them right. And we will not ... let this happen again, he said. παπουτσια NMD Adidas Superstar ανδρικα φθηνα . "No difference at all," chirped U.S. roommate and linemate James van Riemsdyk. Boise State and Wyoming are two programs looking up.When the two teams meet Saturday in Laramie, No. 13 Boise State (7-0, 3-0 Mountain West) will be looking to continue its rise in the AP Top 25 poll , while Wyoming (5-2, 3-0) is looking to continue its ascent from 2-10 finish last year. While first place in the Mountain Division is at stake, the Broncos have their sights set on cracking the Top 10 in hopes of earning a spot in the College Football Playoff. To do that, they need to remain undefeated. This game has big implications not only with the Mountain West Conference but nationally, Wyoming coach Craig Bohl noted. But Broncos coach Bryan Harsin has other more immediate concerns on his mind -- turnovers chief among them.Weve gotten three this year and given up 11, Harsin said. That is not a good ratio for us in the turnover category. Were certainly aware of that, but it needs to change.Boise State has never lost to Wyoming in the 10 meetings between the two teams. The Broncos won easily last year 34-14 .But Harsin said Wyoming is a program on the rise under Bohl, who over the last three years has brought a style of blue-collar, disciplined football that proved successful on the FCS level at North Dakota State.Certainly no surprise that Wyoming has developed this season and is having the success theyre having, Harsin said.Wyoming is led offensively by running back Brian Hill, who is second in the nation in rushing, averaging 144.3 yards. Hill ran for 289 yards last week in a win at Nevada. They are running the football and they are doing it effectively, Harsin said.Bohl said he knew before the season started that the Cowboys were much improved but he said the program is on a good trajectory and maybe a little bit ahead of where Id thought we would be at this point. The Cowboys have recorded their best start in the Mountain West Conference since joining the conference in 1999. They are one win away from becoming bowl eligible. The Cowboys were last in a bowl game in 2011.We didnt get here by chance and now its going to be important that we continue to play well, Bohl said. But were certainly in a different place than where we had been and its not by happenstance.Wyomings improvement this year has raised the stakes with Boise State coming to Laramie -- something Cowboys fans havent had at War Memorial Stadium in years. Some things to watch for in Saturdays game:BRINGING THE OFFENSE: Entering the game, Wyoming has averaged 34.4 points a game this season, and the Broncos 34.3. Both team feature dynamic running backs: Wyomings Brian Hill, who is second in the nation in rushing, and Boise States Jeremy McNichols, who is No. 6 with a per-game average of 130.7 yards on the ground.Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen is No. 3 in the Mountain West in total offense, averaging 231 yards a game. Broncos quarterback Brett Rypien is No. 1 in the league in passing, averaging 294.9 a game. However, Wyoming learned this week that its starting right tackle, Ryan Cummings, will be lost for the season because of a foot injury.WYOMING VERSUS TOP 25 TEAMS IN LARAMIE: Wyoming last beat a Top 25 opponent on Oct. 26, 2002, when it topped No. 22 Air Force 34-26 in Laramie. The highest ranked team Wyoming has ever defeated at home (or on the road) was No. 11 Arizona State in 1972, by a score of 45-43.BOISE IN LARAMIE -- Boise State has beaten Wyoming in all five games between the two teams at Laramie. Those five wins have been by an average of 30.8 points. This year, Wyomings defense has been giving up 30.3 points per game, but it has also recorded four defensive touchdowns and forced 15 turnovers this season.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org Knockoff Football Jerseys . 24 Baylor in a Big 12 clash between teams trending in opposite directions. Michael Clarkes new autobiography is a bit like the man himself. Passionate, emotional and very much a rollercoaster. His time in Australian cricket spanned eras, while also taking him from a young member of a powerful team, to contentious vice-captain of a struggling one, then captain and selector during another most turbulent time. There are plenty of candid thoughts and revelations, as Clarke......Tells of how he was a manufactured right-hander. Clarkes desire to bat right-handed even though he was left-handed in most other things was out of deference to his father, Les. At the age of six, Clarke and his father have the following exchange.I want to bat like you.Sure, all you have to do is stand on the other side of the bat.So it was the Clarke followed the likes of Brian Lara, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Hussey and David Warner as batsmen who play with a dominant top hand. Only Clarke is that rare exception - a left-hander who turns right....Says Andrew Symonds told him he had ambitions to captain Australia. Clarkes early cricket life is populated by a series of big brother figures, from Neil DCosta to Brad Haddin to Shane Warne to Symonds. They are opposites in most every way, but grow close in the Australian team. When Symonds is threatened with being sent home from England in 2005 after infamously showing up drunk to an ODI against Bangladesh, Clarke says hell also quit the tour if Symonds is banished. Later Clarke supports Symonds in the Monkeygate case, even though he doubts the veracity of pursuing a charge of racial taunts.According to Clarke, Symonds says his motivation is this: Im sick and tired of them [India] getting away with it. We never get away with anything, but they do. The incident and its politically expedient aftermath does affect Symonds, about the same time Clarke is appointed Australian vice-captain. In the West Indies, Symonds confides in Clarke that hed like to lead the team one day. Youd make a great captain Symmo, but what do you want me to do about it? Clarke replies. You should go and talk to the selectors about it, throw your hat in the ring. Instead of that, Symonds has a long drinking session later in the tour, and in the presence of Brian Lara pours a drink over Clarkes head. They barely speak after that....Admits what he said to cause Simon Katich to grab him by the shirt. Realising that Katich, Hussey and others in the Australian dressing room are intent on making Clarke wait for the team song, in the SCG dressing room in January 2009, he explodes in a fit of rage and invective.Hang on, youre doing this out of spite, you f****** dogs. Have the balls to say it to my face.Katichs reply of what did you say? brings the rejoinder I said have the balls to say it to my face, you weak c****.With hindsight, Clarke says he got a couple of things wrong here. First, his earlier organisation of a bar for the team to move on to later in the evening should not have been such a big deal in his mind. Secondly, he admits the language he used to Hussey and Katich was wrong. There is a string of actions I took that night that Im sorry for....Says in hindsight he should not have been vice-captain to Ricky Ponting. In Pontings 2013 autobiography, the former captain detailed his oscillating relationship with Clarke, and a feeling he wasnt best supported by his deputy. Three years on, Clarke agrees, and concedes he should not have been made vice-captain in the first place. In his autobiography, Ricky wrote that he was disappointed with some of the things I did as vice-captain. He didnt accuse me of being treacherous or disruptive, but said I was reluctant to get involved in planning meetings or daily debriefs and take on a leadership role. When my private life was turbulent, he said, I would go into my shell. He was right. I was not a good vice-captain to him.Clarkes biggest leadership influences were his dad, Mark Taylor and Shane Warne. All took different views on captaincy to Ponting, and Clarke says he was not a good actor when it came to falling into line behind Ponting as deputy. Adam Gilchrist and Brad Haddin, Clarke believes, were far better deputies....Reveals that the Argus review panel asked him whether he wanted Ponting in his team as captain. If you become captain of Australia, would you want Ricky Ponting in the team? That question, Clarke says, was put to him by Don Argus, Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh, James Sutherland and Malcolm Speed in an interview at the SCG in 2011. The nature of the question means the interview takes place before Ponting has actually quit as captain, which he does on his return from a failed World Cup campaign in India in March. Clarke recalls making a strong affirmation of Pontings importance. The panel also ask Clarke what he thinks about the captain being a selector, a role he will find himself filling before the end of the year. Clarkes response? Its all about accountability. The way Ive been brought up to play cricket, the captain has always taken accountability for success and defeat. If I was captain and I had played a big part in picking the players at the selection table, I would be able to stand up and say its my fault, I stuffed up. We picked the wrong players. Id be happy to put my hand up and take responsibility for that. Soon he would be, though not in the way he had imagined....Says the selectors were going to drop Ponting had he not retired in Perth in 2012. Clarkes relationship with the former national selector John Inverarity appears one of the most problematic in the book. Clarke says he struggled almost immediately with Inveraritys schoolmasterly conversational style, railing against any sense of being talked down to. Earlier in his career, Clarke had asked to be told he had been dropped by Ponting rather than a selector, suggesting he never really acknowledged the authority of the role. Later, Clarke reveals that in the lead-up to the 2012 SCG Test against India, his crowning batting moment, that Inverarity had emailed Mickey Arthur to say I have technical deficiencies and I am not the player I used to be. Rage at that assessment helps to fuel the monumental 329 not out that follows. But most telling of Clarkes recollections is that later that same year, when Ponting is struggling after low scores in the first two home Tests against South Africa, the selectors decide to drop him after Perth. John confides that the other selectors have made their minds up that Perth will be Rickys last Test match, whether he scores nought or a hundred. Ponting, of course, had come to a similar conclusion. But things would have played out in far more ugly fashion had he not....Conveys his unhappiness at how his power was reduced with appointment of Darren Lehmann and influence of Pat Howard. Homeworkgate in India in 2013 was effectively the end for Mickey Arthur, as Howard and James Sutherland concluded that the Test team needed a different kind of mentor. Lehmann came in with the view that the coach should be a more dominant figure in the running of the national team, something Howard agreed with at least partly due to his background in rugby. But Clarke did not agree, and makes this patently clear. This was true in hindsight as well as foresight - he disliked the way Ponting had delegated many tasks. There are a million and one things they have taken away from the captain so that I can focus on what happens on the field, but I want those things! I was not expecting to be moved down the food chain, halfway through my captaincy. Clarkes discontent about this change runs through the next 12 months, despite the success it reaps. So when things change later in 2014, he is even more unhappy....Speaks vividly of the hours and days around the death of Phillip Hughes, and how it affected him. The arguments Clarke finds himself having with Lehmann, Howard and the selection chairman Rod Marsh in the lead-up to the 2014-15 home Tests are many, related principally to his fitness. It is all coming to a head on the day Phillip Hughes is batting at the SCG in a Sheffield Shield match. But from the moment Clarke checks his phone after a fitness session, everything is cast aside. The passages at St Vincents Hospital are raw and vivid, including the moment that Clarke and Ponting, both weeping openly, farewell Hughes together. But they also convey a level of shocked detachment in Clarke that allows him to work as the go-between for the inconsolable Hughes family and the wider cricket world.Within days there is the funeral, then the Adelaide Test, in which Clarke goes on to a hundred despite recurring back trouble that leads the team physio and friend Alex Kountouris to exclaim If you bat here and do your back again, you mightnt be able to play another game. Ever. The lack of time to grieve Hughes death brings up other issues, and a very real fear of falling victim to a similar fate. All this compounds in the West Indies (the worst tour of my life? No contest) and England through 2015, leading finally to retirement. Through that period from November 2014 to August 2015, I am burnt out by a lifetime of cricket and unable to stop and take in the enormity of Hughesys passing....Discusses how his behaviour over the years suggested obsessive compulsive disorder. The books final chapter is entitled Obsessive and Compulsive, and tries to make sense of so many enigmatic and contradictory events chronicled over the preceding pages. A lot of this relates to Clarkes degenerative back condition, that forces routine to be near enough to monastic in order to get him onto the field each day. But there are also other moments, like the day in 2003 when Clarke recalls betting with the then team manager Steve Bernard that he will be retired from international cricket by the age of 30. That, of course, is the age at which Clarke then finds himself made captain of Australia. That same year he is offered the option of surgery that will replace the worst of the degenerative discs in his back. But Clarke cannot abide the idea of the six-month layoff that would entail, so he is fuelled by painkilling tablets and injections throughout 2011-12, his peak period. But that gives way to more physical infirmity, anger and impatience and no let-up in an obsessive desire to keep driving forward. Until, he writes in the very last sentence, I retire, when the fog lifts. My Story - Michael Clarke, published by Macmillan Australia, is available now Los Angeles Angels Store .ca looks back at the stories and moments that made the year memorable. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- KeVaughn Allen and Dwayne Bacon both made their mark in last years Florida-Florida State game. That has continued this season as the sophomore guards face each other again on Sunday in the latest edition of the Sunshine State Showdown.Allen, who scored a career-high 32 points in last years game, leads the 21st-ranked Gators (7-2) in scoring, averaging 13.2 points per game. Bacon, who hit the game-winning shot last year to give the Seminoles a 73-71 win, is averaging 16.6 points.Allen said Friday that his performance last year against the Seminoles gave him a boost in confidence and that the momentum continues. The coaches every day were telling me to be more aggressive, take the right shots and get teammates involved, Allen said. That game allowed me to shoot with more confidence and just playing hard on defense every night.Allen is the only Florida player to have multiple 20-point games this season (two). He tied a season high with 21 points in last Tuesdays loss to No. 5 Duke.Even though he hit a mid-range jumper to beat the Gators, Bacon struggled with his shot the rest of the season. He worked on his shot during the offseason and it has paid off so far. Bacon is shooting 50.4 percent from the field, compared to 44.7 percent last season. He has led the Seminoles (8-1) in scoring in six games this season and comes in with a 19-game double-figure scoring streak. It was a big shot to get the win but this year I have a much higher role. I am familiar with the system and very comfortable, Bacon said. The Seminoles come in with a five-game winning streak but this will be their biggest non-conference challenge to date. During this stretch they have held opponents to 30.3 percent shooting from the field and have won by an average margin of 28.4 points.Coach Leonard Hamilton is eager to see how his team responds against stiffer competition. In a Nov. 24 game against Temple, the Seminoles held an 18-point lead in the second half but ended up losing by three. For Hamilton, Sundays game will be a better indicator of how his team has progressed with the first Atlantic Coast Conference game coming in two weeks. Are we ready for an ACC-type game? Well its here, he said. Theyve played a higher level of competition that has given them an opportunity to be a little more battle tested than we are.The Gators have had a challenging non-conference schedule with their first 11 on the road due to renovations to the OConnell Center. Besides Duke, they have also faced No. 8 Gonzaga, Seton Hall and Miami. Allen said the biggest lesson from the Duke game is that Florida needs to do a better job limiting turnovers. It committed 10 in the first half as it fell behind by 10 at halftime.Weve got to continue to be more seasoned, to be more poised, whether were going on the run or theyre going on the run, weve got to be more consistent, Florida coach Mike White said. Hopefully were making less of those mistakes and getting closer to maxing out as a team as the season continues.Florida State is trying to win three straight games in the series for the first time in eight years. (Sports Network) - Now this is what was expected of the Toronto Blue Jays back in Spring Training. The Blue Jays have been on a tear with 11 straight wins and look to establish a franchise record for consecutive victories when they open a three-game series tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Toronto was predicted to turn the corner this season and didnt live up to those high expectations until the last two weeks. The club has made the AL East a bit interesting with the current winning streak and is tied with Tampa Bay at five games off the lead. A three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles was the last order of business for the Jays, who used a 13-5 rout of the Os on Sunday to stay on track. Edwin Encarnacion was 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored and his 21st home run, Jose Bautista drove in three runs and Colby Rasmus homered in the win. The 13 runs were a season high for the Blue Jays and they last won 11 straight from June 2-13, 1987 and again from Aug. 27-Sept. 7, 1998. Toronto was 27-36 before the winning streak. "We always figured it was just a matter of time before we started playing better and it lasted longer than we expected, but thats all behind us now," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. Josh Johnson earned his first win as a Blue Jay in his eighth start of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over six-plus innings. Toronto will also visit Boston on this road trip and has won five in a row away from home. The last time the Jays lost was June 10 at the Chicago White Sox. Slated to make his fifth start of the season, Blue Jays right-hander Esmil Rogers gets the nod tonight. Rogers has won two straight trips to the hill and was last in action on Tuesday in an 8-3 triumph over Colorado. The Rockies reached Rogers for three runs -- two earned -- in 6 2/3 innings, but Torontos offense was too much to send Rogers to the loss column. Rogers, who is 3-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 27 games (4 starts), has faced the Rays three times in relief this season and is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in seven career relief stints against them. Tampa Bay is back at the Trop for six games versus Toronto and Detroit, and went 3-4 on a road trip against the Red Sox and New York Yankees. The Rays earned a split of four-game series at Yankee Stadium thanks to Sundays 3-1 win behind starting pitcher Chris Archer. Archer tossed six innings of one-run ball, struck out four batters and allowed only one walk. James Loney drove in two runs in the seventh inning to put the Rays ahead for good and Ben Zobrist got Tampa Bay on the board early with an RBI single in the first inning. Loney ended with three hits, as the Rays halted a two-game slide and had dropped eight of 11 contests. Adam Lind was 1-for-5 and has at least one hit in 17 of his last 20 games. "Weve done that several times this year, with what appeared to be a devastating loss we come back the next day and play well and you win in a very difficult venue," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "So Im really proud of the way the guys handle these moments." Jeremy Hellickson will open this series on the hill for the Rays and has won four of his last five decisions. Hellickson was hammered in a 10-1 loss to Kansas City on June 13, allowing eight runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings, but rebounded six days later in a win at Boston. Hellickson limited the Red Sox to a pair of runs in six innings and pushed his record to 5-3 in 15 starts with a 5.50 earned run average. The right-hander has no record and a 3.46 ERA in two starts against Toronto this season and is 3-2 with a 3.04 ERA in eight career starts in this series. Toronto has won four of seven meetings with Tampa Bay this season. Custom Cleveland Indians Jerseys . Hey!" Wow. If Game 2 is anything like the Giants-Cubs opener, its going to be an intense night at Wrigley Field when San Francisco tries to get even with Chicago. Who has the edge??Go inside the numbers and matchups that will decide Saturdays game, and then vote for which team will win at the bottom of the page.Inside the pitching matchupWhen Jeff Samardzija is on the mound: The free agent delivered exactly what the Giants could have expected, making 32 starts, topping 200 innings, and producing a solid 3.81 ERA. Samardzija works off a 93-95 mph fastball that doesnt generate a high rate of swings and misses but does generate an above-average ground ball rate, especially when he throws the two-seamer.Samardzijas primary secondary pitches in recent years have been a slider and cutter, but in August he suddenly resurrected a curveball he hadnt thrown since 2012, essentially dropping the cutter in the process. The cutter had actually been a pretty effective pitch for him -- batters hit .213/.244/.361 against it -- but the curveball has been even more effective, holding batters to a .179 average in a small sample size so far. Since Samardzija doesnt throw a changeup, the curveball gives him a lower-velocity offspeed pitch to go with the 87 mph slider. The curve is thrown in the low 80s, so maybe the change in speeds will improve the effectiveness of a fastball that batters hit .322/.381/.519 against. (Indeed, his OPS against his fastball went down in August and September). -- David SchoenfieldWhen Kyle Hendricks is on the mound: Speaking of throwing first-pitch strikes, nobody had a higher rate of them than Hendricks, tied with Johnny Cueto at 68.4 percent. That goes a long way to explaining how he led the NL with a 2.13 ERA. Hendricks ranks near the bottom of the league in fastball velocity, but his ERA wasnt just a product of the Cubs defense: He led major league starters in limiting hard contact. He does that by expertly changing speeds with his four-seamer, sinker, curveball, cutter and changeup -- and hitting his spots. Everything is to the corners -- away to lefties, away to righties. No starter had a higher percentage of pitches on the outer half of the plate than Hendricks, with 62 percent of his pitches on the outer third of the strike zone.Hendricks throws his fastball about half the time, increasing the usage of his changeup and cutter this season. Both were deadly weapons as batters hit .135 against the changeup and .164 against the cutter, with good K rates of 29.5 and 25.3 percent. Indeed, dont be fooled by the lack of velocity: His strikeout rate is more than adequate, ranking 24th out of 74 starters. How do you beat him? Its not easy. You can hope he elevates a fastball or misses over the middle, but he doesnt do that often. Knowing he pounds the strike zone, you can try to jump on him early in the count. He didnt have a large platoon split, so thats not a major factor. The Giants do put the ball in play, so maybe their ability to foul off pitches will come into play, waiting for Hendricks to make a mistake. -- SchoenfieldPlayer in the spotlightBuster Posey. Poseys power disappeared in the second half with only three home runs and he hit only .257 in September. Poseys postseason history at the plate isnt good -- a weak .241/.318/.319 line entering this series over 49 games, with only four home runs. The Giants won the World Series in 2014 even though Posey didnt have an extra-base hit the entire postseason. I doubt they can win if that happens again. -- SchoenfieldWhat will decide tonights gameIf Samardzijas curveball can quiet the Cubs bats. He used his curveball 15 percent of the time in the second half after not throwing a single curve in the first. Opponents hit just .179 on the pitch with a .425 OPS. It would be prudent for Samardzija to throw the curve Saturday ... a lot. The Cubs hit just .193 off curveballs this season, 25th in the majors. Their .577 OPS ranked 20th. Who specifically should he use it against? Addison Russell hit .122 against curveballs this season, 141st of 146 qualifying hitters.?--?Sarah Langs, ESPN Stats & InfoChoosing sides: Who will win?As good as Hendricks was this year, with barely a mistake for six months, he still has to prove himself in October. Last postseason, he failed to make it out of the fifth inning in both starts. I expect a higher-scoring game, which isnt saying much after Fridays 1-0 affair, but Samardzija will outpitch Hendricks by just enough. -- Mark SaxonThis is the matchup the Cubs have been waiting for even if they didnt know it. What they do know is Samardzija. He is decidedly more hittable than Cueto, as he has given up 14 hits in 10 innings to his former team -- and the Cubs have scored nine runs off him. Meanwhile, the aggressive Giants will be sliced and diced by Hendricks, leading to a pull-away victory by the home team. -- Jesse RogersWe saw the template for how this series is likely to go in Game 1. Hendricks and his 1.32 home ERA are tough to beat, but we know the Giants wont be rattled by their rough loss Friday. Win Saturday and they still split and have Madison Bumgarner looming in Game 3. Still, Hendricks has just been too good at Wrigley and as solid as Samardzija has been, the Cubs starter has been on a different level. Cubs go up 2-0.?-- Bradford DoolittleWhere the series standsAfter a thrilling Game 1 win, the Cubs have a chance to push the Giants to the brink on Saturday night -- and they better capitalize on it, because Bumgarner will get the ball when the series shifts to San Francisco. ?--?ESPN.com Custom Los Angeles Angels Jerseys . TORONTO - It appears Mark DeRosa will finish his 16th major league season with the Toronto Blue Jays, the club valuing his experience and leadership so much it wouldnt lose him to a waiver claim. “Hes helped stabilize some things” said manager John Gibbons. “I know hes really helped Lawrie. Hes just that proven vet that everybody bounces things off of. Hes got the right things to say at the right time. Its been a frustrating year but, you know, hes helped stabilize some things.” According to numerous reports, DeRosa was claimed on revocable waivers on Wednesday. A routine paper move, had the player cleared the Blue Jays would have been free to trade DeRosa at any point in August or September. Once DeRosa was claimed, the Jays had a decision to make: deal or no deal with the selecting club. CBS Sports reported the team which took DeRosa was, like the Blue Jays, under .500, therefore not increasing the veterans likelihood of competing in the playoffs. DeRosa has a World Series ring as a member of the 2010 San Francisco Giants but, due to injury, he doesnt consider himself a contributor to the championship. The Blue Jays hold an option on DeRosa for 2014 for $750,000. The 38-year-old doesnt yet know whether hell play next season. “I go back and forth on it everyday,” said DeRosa. “I think my family will play a huge part in that. Thats something, in the offseason, well sit down and discuss as a family. Ive been gone for a long time and my wife always has the line, ‘Do you want to raise 24 men or do you want to raise your own son? A little bit below the belt for her to tell me those things but I understand wholeheartedly. Itll be a family decision but I still think I can compete.” DeRosa has proven to himself he can still play. Coming off three down seasons thanks to two surgeries to repair a torn tendon sheath in his wrist, the first of which was botched, DeRosa knew in spring training he had some pop back in his bat. He was driving the ball during batting practice, something he couldnt do during the worst days of his injury. This season, afforded more of an opportunity to play than he anticipated, hes hit seven home runs and posted an OPS of .769, which is above his career average. “Im appreciative of the way Gibby has used me,” said DeRosa. “I dont think coming out of spring training I was expecting or he was expecting to use me as much as he has. Im glad Ive changed that opinion. I know the team has had something to do with that and our struggles have given me more opportunity to play. Hes handled me really great. Hes kept me fresh. Hes kept me involved. The way hes handled me has been perfect.” More valuable than his numbers is DeRosas ability to connect with anyone in the clubhouse. Lawrie tops the list and the two have shared neighbouring locker stalls since the start of spring training. Theyve golfed together, can be seen arriving to visiting ballparks together, and have struck up a friendship despite a 15-year age difference. “Hes been tremendous,” said Lawrie, who at 23 is the mentee to DeRosas mentor. “What a good dude. I havent met anybody for that fact, in baseball, thats been around the game like him. His personality is exactly like mine. Hes just one of the guys. He has good energy. He comes to the clubhouse everyday with a smile, brings a good attitude. Hes just been around the game a long time. Hes been to 11 postseasons. Hes been in the game for 14, 15 years. There are not a lot of guys that have been around like he has and have gone to the extent, hes won a World Series and hes done all these things and he knows what it takes to win. He knows what it takes to be in the big leagues for a long, extended period of time and thats beneficial to me.” “Being more of a big brother for him,” said DeRosa of his responsibility toward Lawrie. “Letting him vent, letting him say what he needs to say and then picking and choosing what battles to fight with him. You dont just want to flood a guy with a million things to think about. I think with him its got to be in steps but he has to understand the importance of being accountable, being in the right place at the right time, being consistent.” Lawrie has touched nerves this season, perhaps no more so than when he stared down Adam Lind and third base coach Luis Rivera when Lind didnt score on a fly ball during a June 22 game against Baltimore. DeRosa said then, and repeats now, that Lawrie has a unique intensity which comes from a good place even if, on occasion, its appearance is ugly. As to the fundamentals of the game, DeRosas spoken to Lawrie about how the intensity, the constant movement, can be beneficial on defence but ineffective in the batters box. Hes been persistent in delivering the message, as well as others, and he believes its starting to sink in. When sharing his wisdom, hes quick to remind teammates hes passing along information from the greats with whom hes played; the likes of Albert Pujols, Chipper Jones and Gary Sheffield. DeRosa is someone players, and even the manager, can confide in. “I talk to him about different things, no question,” said Gibbons. “The thing about DeRo, hes a levelheaded guy. I mean, hes highly intelligent and hes been around, man. Hes been around winners his whole life, his whole career.” “He tells you straight up, hes not going to lie to you,” said Lawrie. “He tells you everything thats on his mind and says Im going to be honest with you. I say, go ahead and shoot me with it because thats how I am, I like to know the truth, I like to know whats on his mind and obviously everyone elses but for myself, a guy thats 38-years-old thats been around the game for this long and done everything hes done, its a lot of fun for myself.” DeRosa is a stand-up guy, good to his teammates, good to his coaches, good to those around the team. An Ivy Leaguer, he quarterbacked Penns football team for three seasons in the mid-1990s, DeRosa is also intelligent and approachable on all matters of the game. Hell play again in 2014 if he gets the blessing of his wife and two children and if he feels like going through the rigours of another offseason of training. Dont mistake the decision hell make, whatever it is, for his view of the Blue Jays. “I still believe in the talent in this room,” he said. “I know it hasnt jelled for whatever reason. There are a ton of reasons why it hasnt worked from an offensive standpoint and a pitching standpoint, a defensive standpoint. I still believe that this team is capable of great things with a couple of tweaks, a couple of adjustments.” Fausse Adidas Nmd .C. - The Carolina Hurricanes have placed backup goalie Anton Khudobin on injured reserve with an unspecified lower-body injury. Relief - thats the emotion Warriors coach Andrew McFadden says flooded through him when halfback Shaun Johnson danced his way over the line for a golden-point NRL win against Penrith. The Warriors leapfrog the defeated Panthers to claim eighth place on the ladder after their 20-16 victory at a rain-soaked Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday that finally gave them a win during extra time in the fourth attempt in five matches.Johnson shaped to kick a field goal with just a minute of extra time remaining before shimmying past several Panthers defenders to score next to the posts.Three golden-point losses to the Sharks, Sea Eagles and Raiders in the past four weeks left McFaddens side reeling, and the Australian coach said an extra-time winner was well overdue. He commended Johnsons quick thinking with the clock ticking down.Weve been consistent, weve been competing really hard and weve been in every game weve played in the last two months,, McFadden said. That was a very composed play because (Johnson) knew he wasnt getting a clean shot away and he knew he had tackles up his sleeve.A slow start for both sides was blown open in the 17th minute when Warriors centre David Fusitua went up uncontested to claim a Thomas Leuluai cross-field kick and score. The Auckland-based side dominated the opening 40 minutes with 58 per cent possession, and grabbed a second try before the break when Ken Maumalo slid into the corner. The Panthers and Warriors scored a try apiece in the first 15 minutes of the second half before a pair of Josh Mansour tries for Penrith took the match into extra time.Warriors skipper Ryan Hoffman was glad his side didnt crumble after two earlier failed attempts to snare a golden-point winner.Increased aggression during extra time was key to turning the tables on their past three golden-point defeats. There was no panic there, doing a snapshot that gives the opposition seven tackles and gives them another opportunity, Hoffman said. For the Panthers, it was all pain and little gain. The side drops out of the eight with five matches remaining, but are aided by a relatively simple run-in against teams including the Roosters, Knights and Tigers.I thought our guys clearly didnt have our execution right in the first half but I was really proud of our effort to claw our way back into that game, Penrith coach Anthony Griffin said.We had better momentum and were a lot smarter, applying a lot more pressure than the Warriors, but once it gets to golden point anything can happen. The scientists believe the small earthquake during a Marshawn Lynch touchdown was likely greater than Lynchs famous "beast quake" touchdown run three years ago, which also came against New Orleans during a playoff game. PHOENIX -- Think about all the damage that the Minnesota Lynx can do with their big names. It almost seems like overkill, then, that one of their most productive players in Sundays 82-67 WNBA semifinal series-clinching victory over Phoenix is someone they picked up in a trade in February without expecting shed make this big an impact.Sometimes getting lucky is good, Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said. We didnt necessarily know what we were getting in Natasha Howard. But theres that saying that the harder you work, the luckier you get. The Lynx as an organization have worked very hard to build what has now stretched into six seasons of excellence, and theyll be going for their fourth WNBA title in that stretch. The play of Howard -- who had 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and eight rebounds Sunday -- is just one example of the culture the Lynx have built. Their incredibly strong core of key players -- Maya Moore, Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson -- have been together since the franchises first championship in 2011.The personnel moves the Lynx have made since then all have been with the goal of making an already great team even a little harder to beat. Look at the players added to the Lynx this year and last year, which include the likes of Sylvia Fowles, Renee Montgomery, Anna Cruz, Jia Perkins and Howard. Theyve all contributed specific things to the Lynx without taking anything away.UConn and USA Basketball coach Geno Auriemma always says that teams either get better or they get worse, but they dont just stay the same. The Lynx, who have become the WNBAs version of UConn in terms of sustained success, are an example of what hes talking about. Theyve continued to get better. Its all about being selfless, and thats the culture of our team, Reeve said. And we want to make sure we add those pieces that subscribe to that mentality. All the credit should go to the core players that we have, because other players want to play with them. Theyre tremendous superstars, yet theyre so humble and supportive. You watch them on the bench when theyre not in the game, and they have a lot of fun over there rooting for other players. Its genuine, and thats how they are all the time. The Lynx might be having a blast, but their opponents arent. Minnesota had the best regular-season record in franchise history (28-6) this year. The Lynx won all three of the semifinal games against Phoenix by double digits. Minnesota was the No. 1 seed and Phoenix No. 8, so the Lynx obviously were a big favorite. But remember, a few months ago, a lot of people predicted Phoenix would be the top contender for the title this year.Reeve complimented the Mercury on how much effort they put into these playoff games, but she also felt that the Lynx had enough high-quality depth that they could wear out Phoenix. And that happened. Led by Howard, the Lynx bench got 29 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.Indiana took Howard, out of Floridaa State, with the No.dddddddddddd 5 pick in the 2014 draft. She had a solid rookie season for the Fever, averaging 7.0 points and 3.1 rebounds. Her numbers dropped off a little last season, but the potential was still there. The Lynx were expecting to bring back post player Devereaux Peters, who was their third pick in the 2012 draft, this season. She had been a Minnesota reserve for four seasons. But Reeve said Peters wanted to play elsewhere. Hence, a deal with Indiana for Howard earlier this year.Howard has worked out well for Minnesota, as have the others, such as Fowles, who sat out until late July 2015 to force a trade to the Lynx from Chicago. She was the WNBA Finals MVP last year and recently was named the 2016 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. And guards such as Perkins and Montgomery are veterans who provide a different look, especially on defense, to help spell Augustus and Whalen.Im excited, happy and thankful that weve created an environment here that people want to be a part of, said Augustus, the longest-tenured Lynx player going back to being chosen No. 1 in the 2006 WNBA draft. Jia or Renee could have gone somewhere else and probably started. Thats what we pride ourselves on: We have a great team of athletes, but also a great team of people. For Moore, who has had another MVP-caliber season, the long-term chemistry the Lynx possess is a thing of wonderment. Its like being in unchartered waters, said Moore, who had 20 points and six rebounds Sunday. If you have that kind of feeling in high school or college, those are four years. With the pros ... maybe two or three years would be good. But this is year six for us. Its like, Wow. And theres no question that its people from the top down, starting with our owner, that make that happen. At different times on this team, people might have a tired day, and someones always there to pick them up. Were constantly looking out for each other. Before the Olympic break this season, the Lynx and the Los Angeles Sparks were neck-and-neck as the top teams in the WNBA. Since the break, Minnesota clearly has been the best. The Sparks, who beat the Lynx at Minnesota in late June but lost two other times to them, still seem to have the best chance to derail the defending champions. But Los Angeles will have to get into the WNBA Finals first; they lost 70-66 in their Game 3 at Chicago on Sunday. The Sparks will try again to close out the series with the Sky on Tuesday (ESPN2, 8 p.m. ET).Meanwhile the Lynx will take the opportunity to get some rest as they wait to see whom they will face in their fifth trip to the WNBA Finals in the past six years. This group has been a very special group. And the vibe ... I think its because they all have a piece in this, Reeve said. Its been very, very rewarding for me, watching them throughout the season. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Henrik Lundqvist stopped two personal losing streaks and helped the New York Rangers start the new season with a big win against their crosstown rivals.Lundqvist stopped 25 shots, Chris Kreider scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and the Rangers scored three times over a 7:52 stretch to beat the Islanders 5-3 Thursday night.I was impressed with how the guys played with a lot of jump and great energy, Lundqvist said. It was great to see the way we started off this season. I thought we played really well, a fast game. We had a stretch in the third where obviously we just have to manage the puck a little better.Lundqvist beat Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak for the first time since Jan. 17, 2010, ending Halaks eight-game winning streak in the matchups -- including the last five since joining the Islanders before the 2014-15 season. Lundqvist had also lost six straight overall (0-5-1) against the Islanders.Michael Grabner, Mats Zuccarello, Brandon Pirri and J.T. Miller also scored for the Rangers, who were opening a season at home for the first time since 2007.I think just for the team it was a really good effort, Kreider said. A couple things we struggled with last year that we focused on right from the start, which I think is a great sign. You see us playing fast again. There are 81 games to play, but you want to play well in game one, game two, three, etc.Nick Leddy and Cal Clutterbuck scored 3:17 apart early in the third period to tie it for the Islanders. Brock Nelson also had a goal and Halak finished with 34 saves.Islanders captain John Tavares briefly left the game after getting whacked on his left hand in the opening minute of the third. On the go-ahead goal, Kreider took a pass from rookie Pavel Buchnevich, skated in on Halak, crossed over to the right side and backhanded the puck past Halak at 9:45 of the third period. We are playing a good team and theyve got some good speed, Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. Kreider got behind one of our guys on the game-winning goal. Its as simple as that. Its a game of inches.Pirri made it 4-2 with 3:49 left on a power-play goal from the right faceoff dot. Miller added an empty-netter to make it 5-2 with 2:23 remaining before Nelson closed the scoring just more than a minute later.Rangers coach Alain Vigneault liked the way his team bounced back after giving up the lead. They make it 2-2, we made a couple of mistakes on rush coverage, but I liked the way we responded and came right back and made it 3-2, Vigneault said. Power play went out in a pressure moment and gave us a two-goal lead and that was a big part of getting two points in this game.Trailing 2-0, Leddy got the Islanders on the scoreboard 47 seconds into the third period as he took a pass from Casey Cizikas and fired it in off the left post.Clutterbuck tied it at 4:04 when he deflected a shot by Nikolay Kulemin from the left faceoff circle past Lundqvist.Grabner, who played for the Islanders from 2010-15, started the scoring with 6:19 left in the first period. Pirri got the puck from Jesper Fast and his shot from the inner edge of the left circle was stopped by Halak, but the puck deflected to Grabner on the right side and he put it in.Zuccarello made it 2-0 when his backhander toward the front of the goal deflected off Islanders forward Ryan Stromes skate and through Halaks five-hole with 2:19 left in the second period.Halak denied J.T. Miller on a breakaway during a Rangers power play about 5 1/2 minutes into the second period, moving up out of the crease to challenge the play. The Islanders started slow and had just two shots on goal through the first 9:45, but then had three in a 26-second stretch. Ladd had a tip attempt and follow, and Shane Prince a wrister.Game notes The Rangers celebrated the start of their 90th season in a pregame ceremony. Former players in attendance included Eddie Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Ron Duguay, Dave Maloney, Ron Greschner, John Vanbiesbrouck, Mike Richter, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier and 1994 Stanley Cup champion head coach Mike Keenan. ... Lundqvist became the second goalie in franchise history to start 11 consecutive season openers, joining Giacomin (11 from 1965-66 to `75-76). ... Kerry, Two nights after the Scott-Eriksson incident in Buffalo, the Bruins returned home to play San Jose. In that game, Zdeno Chara put a check on Tommy Wingels that clearly targeted his head. The thoughts lingered with Mason Rudolph for a while after Sept. 10.You play the what-if game in your head, said Rudolph, the Oklahoma State quarterback whose fourth-down throwaway as time expired in Week 2 should have secured a 27-24 win for the Cowboys over Central Michigan. What if the Mid-American Conference officials, after flagging Rudolph for intentional grounding, had correctly ended the game instead of awarding an untimed down to CMU? What if Rudolph had killed the clock without throwing the ball? What if the Big 12 replay crew -- later suspended for the mistake, alongside the MAC officials -- had taken action before Cooper Rush stepped up in the pocket and heaved a pass 41 yards to Jesse Kroll, who pitched to Corey Willis for the final 10 yards of an unthinkable, game-winning score? And what if all else remained intact -- an uncertainty, to be sure -- after an Oklahoma State victory over the Chippewas, leading to Saturday, when the No. 10 OSU (9-2, 7-1 Big 12) visits ninth-ranked Oklahoma (9-2, 8-0) for the league title and an ever-dwindling shot at the College Football Playoff? You know, thats life, Rudolph said, and youve got to move on. We moved and put it behind us.But have they?Coach Mike Gundy, in nearly the same breath as saying this week that hes not paid any attention to the potential playoff ramifications of the early-season game, mentioned that multiple NFL teams had recently won in the way OSU attempted against Central Michigan.I told the team that I consider that a win -- and I always will, Gundy said Monday. But it was a great life lesson for them. They handled it the right way, and theyve done very well since. After the Cowboys stomped TCU for a seventh consecutive victory, Gundy said he believed that Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt, chair of CFP selection committee, was playing poker and that Hocutt views Oklahoma State as a 10-win team.Hocutt has indicated otherwise.I thought we put a committee together to eliminate the computer, Gundy said later, so the humans could make decisions based on actual game situations. And so, I would think without a computer involved, that it would benefit [Oklahoma State].Fact is, it has not benefited the Cowboys. At least not yet..ddddddddddddIf Oklahoma State beats the Sooners and there are upsets in the Pac-12 and ACC title games, perhaps the nature of the Week 2 loss -- combined with a Big 12 title -- would help OSU with the committee when compared to a two-loss Big Ten champion, Colorado and Michigan.Among that four-team mix, from which no possible member currently ranks below the Cowboys, Oklahoma State would have to finish in the top two.But what if Oklahoma State, instead, was 11-1 and had not given the committee reason to consider Week 2?I feel like everybody on the team kind of had that same process of thinking, running back Chris Carson said. We all thought, What if something different had happened and we won that [CMU] game? Its something thats on my mind when you see a team with one loss going to the playoff. But its not going to help us to go back and think about it.And thats where Gundy has succeeded most. Despite his own public comments in the past two weeks, the coach closed the matter with his players in mid-September.He told us to come back hot, Rudolph said, bring the fire back into it.Safety Jordan Sterns said the Cowboys may have gained focus as a result of the Week 2 loss. In fact, whos to say that Oklahoma State, without that setback, would have outlasted Pitt and Texas Tech or come from behind in the second half to win two Big 12 games?Coach Gundy did a great job, Sterns said, of saying, Hey you guys played hard. Thats all we can ask for. He told us not to hang our heads. It was all about how we responded. We worked too hard to let a game like that distract us from what our goal was.Remember, Saturday is big. A win over Oklahoma would give the Cowboys their second conference title in 41 seasons. This is for a ring, Sterns said. This is for some jewelry, man.Gundy hinted that he might soon have more to say about the playoff impact of Week 2.Its a non-factor until we play the last game this Saturday, the coach said. And then? Even if the Cowboys win, the chances are good that theyll be left only to ponder the two words that danced in the head of their quarterback. What if? ' ' '

I am happy with the efforts I have put in and I will continue to work hard with Long Island Nets as this is just the beginning. I cant say I will reach somewhere in the next few years, but I will give my 100%.?Two other Indians Amjyot Singh and Amrinder Singh were also a part of the drafting process, but 21 year-old Palpreet- the youngest of the lot - was the only one who was picked at the draft. With the 80th pick of the 2016 #DLeagueDraft, the @LongIslandNets select Palpreet Singh out of India! pic.twitter.com/JyicqhM5nJ- NBA D-League (@nbadleague) 30 October 2016The 6 feet 9 inches tall power forward didnt play for India at the recently concluded FIBA Asia Challenge Championship as he was training at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan to get in shape for the draft. Amjyot Singh and Amrinder Singh represented India at the FIBA Asia Challenge as India impressed by beating a higher ranked China side en route to reaching the quarterfinals.?I think the training in New York helped a lot, but I want to play for my country as well. I thought training here would eventually make me a better player which will help me making the national team in the future. When asked if he followed any players in the NBA, he said, I dont follow any player in the NBA. I just want to play my natural game. I just want to be Palpreet.Palpreet thanked his coach, Dr. Sankaran Subramanian - who has ?spent 43 years as a basketball coach in India - for having a huge impact on his career.I am very lucky to be coached by Subramanian sir. MONTREAL -- Sixth-seeded Venus Williams tumbled out of the Rogers Cup in the third round Thursday night, falling 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-3 to 10th-seeded Madison Keys in an all-American match.Playing her last tournament match before the Rio Olympics, the 36-year-old Williams lost seven straight games before holding serve in the third game of the second set. After Williams rallied to tie the match, Keys found her serve in the third set, ending the match with her 12th ace.The 21-year-old Keys won the Wimbledon tuneup event in Birmingham, England, this year for her second WTA Tour title, then reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. Shell face 16th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in the quarterfinals.Williams beat Barbora Strycova -- the Czech player whom Keys topped in the Birmingham final -- on Wednesday in her first match since losing to Britains Johanna Konta on Sunday in the Bank of the West Classic final. Against Keys, Williams struggled with her serve. Her first serve was definitely slower than normal, Keys said. But it was funny, her second serve was a lot slower, but because of the court, it was bouncing a lot higher than normal. So while her first serve was a little easier to return, her second serve was really tough.Pavlyuchenkova beat fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. Its going to be a tough match, Keys said about Pavlyuchenkova. Shes always tricky because she definitely fights till the end, and shes going to hit a lot of winners.Pavlyuchenkova let two match points slip away while leading 5-4 in the second set and then lost the game on a double fault. She rebounded in the third set to extend her longest run at the hardcourt event.I think Im still recovering from the second set, Pavlyuchenkova said. Basically, I thought I had the match in my pocket and lost it, so Im happy with the mental side.Radwanska won in 2014 in Montreal.dddddddddddd.The 15th-seeded Konta beat American Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal against Slovakias Kristina Kucova, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner over Canadas Eugenie Bouchard in the late match.Bouchard was penalized a point for racket abuse in the third set, when she struggled to hit the lines to the disappointment of what had been a festive center-court crowd at Uniprix Stadium.I played some high-quality tennis this week -- I cant forget those two matches -- but two matches is not a whole tournament, Bouchard said. I need to learn how to keep it going and deal with the pressure. I just felt I maybe panicked a little bit, tried to finish the points too soon.Second-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany beat Ukraines Elina Svitolina 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4.Im still improving to playing better tennis, being more aggressive and just going for it, Kerber said. I think today I was a little bit too excited to going for it. This is sometimes, I think, the problem.Kerber will face Russias Daria Kasatkina, a 7-5, 6-3 winner over seventh-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy.Fifth-seeded Simona Halep of Romania, a finalist last year in Toronto, beat 14th-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-3. Pliskova, the WTA Tour ace leader, had only five in the match.I knew that its going to be tough because I dont get rhythm from her, Halep said. You never know what to expect for the next point, so theres a bit of tension. I just had to stay patient for every ball and to keep fighting because I knew that if I stay there for every ball, she can miss more than me.Halep will face ninth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, a 7-6 (2), 6-3 winner over 12th-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. Washington Redskins cornerback?Josh Norman was fined $25,000 by the NFL for a postgame rant about official Brad Freeman.?Norman said during his appearance on the Fox pregame show Sunday that he would appeal the fine.Norman said Freeman sucked during the Redskins 27-27 tie vs. the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 30.He was flagged four times for illegal use of his hands -- he had been called for seven such penalties in his career before this game. He also was called once for pass interference while defending Bengals wideout A.J. Green. Players are typically not fined for criticizing officials, but Norman was because he singled out one official. The NFLs highest-paid corner has now been fined three times in the first eight weeks of the season. The NFL fined him $48,620 for a hit on New York Giants receiver Sterling Shepard and $9,115 for shooting an imaginary bow and arrow while celebrating an interception against the Cleveland Browns. All the fines seem to be excessive over the amount of whats going on, Norman said on Fox. I understand, yeah, I singled out an official. But where is it that says that I only single out an official that I cant say anything about them in that way. I didnt question where I said he blew a game or lost in that kind of manner. I just said he sucked. After the game, Norman also was upset about a penalty on teammate Pierre Garcon, who was called for offensive pass interference in overtime to wipe out a crucial first-down catch, and about a missed face mask penalty on Jamison Crowders touchdown reception. The Redskins were called for 15 penalties in the tie.But Norman said during his appearance Sunday that some of the flags on him were legitimate. You know how it is when getting hands on people and sometimes you miss a step here, he said. Yes, I admit I did get up in A.J.s face a little bit. Some of those calls, yeah, I accept. But every single time it just has to be a point where the receiver has put his hands on me and is moving. LOUIS -- Rookie Tavon Austin has missed another day of practice, lessening the odds hell be ready for the St. There are two very different kinds of shrugs that athletes can give when asked about how their season is unfolding. One is a shrug of frustration, a gesture that says theres no satisfying explanation for whats gone wrong. The other, though, is a happy shrug that says, Theres really no magic formula for why were playing very well. Were just executing. We all know the Los Angeles Sparks have had more than a few seasons of unpleasant shrugging, where they couldnt pinpoint exactly why a team that clearly had talent was inconsistent or sometimes even floundered. Now, though, any shrugs the Sparks might give are accompanied by smiles. They can detail all the reasons things have gone so well in whats been a 20-2 season thus far. But its ultimately more a mindset that has taken hold -- one that is not defined as much by the specific things the Sparks are doing well, but the general sense that they now expect them.As they close out the pre-Olympics part of the season this week -- with games Tuesday at Indiana (ESPN2, 8 p.m. ET) and at Washington on Friday -- the Sparks sound confident that theyll have a strong finish now and then be able to pick up where they left off when the season resumes in late August after a monthlong break for the Summer Games.I think that what separates us this year as opposed to other years, said Sparks guard Kristi Toliver, is that weve always had the talent, but I think everybodys been willing to sacrifice a little bit of themselves. When you do that, great things happen. And thats just been the case this season. We just have a really good team, and we know how to play the game.Yes, the Sparks on Sunday dealt with one of their rare disappointments this year when they fell 91-74 at Atlanta. Had Los Angeles won, a 21-1 mark would have been the best start for a WNBA season. Instead, the Sparks share that distinction with the now-defunct Houston Comets at 20-2.How upsetting was that loss? Guard Alana Beard said the Sparks really put no emphasis on the record. And that while it was tough to lose a game, Los Angeles wasnt overly concerned about it from a historical context. It was never a focus of ours, Beard said. The record means nothing if you ddont have a championship at the end.ddddddddddddToliver echoed that, saying that the Dream seemed more motivated to prevent L.A. from getting the mark than the Sparks were motivated to set it. When it was over, though, Toliver did acknowledge feeling worse about it than she probably expected to.I think its unfortunate that we were not able to capitalize on such a special opportunity, Toliver said. But in the big picture, we have a lot of work to do, and we know we have to get better. If it takes that kind of sting to really make changes, then I think ultimately it will be worth it.Shes speaking sort of rhetorically, though. Because there really arent many big changes that need to be made for a team that remains the pacesetter for the WNBA. The Sparks are averaging 85.7 points, which is third-best in the league. And they are holding their opponents to 75.1 points, which is best in the WNBA.Forward Nneka Ogwumike is on the short list of league MVP candidates, averaging 19.5 points and 8.7 rebounds, while shooting a WNBA-best 71.4 percent from the field. Candace Parker is also having a very big season, averaging 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.1 assists.Did not being chosen for the U.S. Olympic team give Ogwumike and Parker a little extra motivation this season? It almost certainly has, but that isnt a bad thing. Neither player is dwelling on it, but can use it as an understandable bit of fuel.Toliver is the Sparks third-leading scorer at 14.1, and shes shooting 45 percent from 3-point range. And in his second season in L.A., Brian Agler has a full buy-in from his team. Again, that has not always been the case with the Sparks and their coaches. But it is now, and the Spark have no intention of letting any of that slide. We have a mature team, and they understand what its going to take on both ends of the floor, Toliver said. I think Coach has done a really good job of preaching the little things to us. We attack each day with just wanting to get better. We dont take wins for granted; we know how hard it is to get them in this league. ' ' '

Running back Bryce Love,?Christian McCaffreys speedy sidekick in the Stanford backfield, will not play in the Cardinals season opener against Kansas State on Friday night due to injury.Head coach David Shaw?did not disclose the exact nature of Loves injury, but the sophomore was seen in a walking boot at practice about 10 days ago. When momentum is with you, it can be very kind, but also if youre struggling to gain it, it can be brutal. If youre trying to turn round momentum, and gain wins, its a terrible game. But if you have momentum with you, everything seems to click. It has been suggested that England have more potential match-winners with bat than ball but Morgan disputes that suggestion. Morgan is happy to have spinners Moeen Ali (left) and Adil Rashid (right) Paceman Steven Finn remains absent but the captain has plenty of faith in spinners Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali, and left-arm seamers Reece Topley and David Willey.I think this attaack can win games for us, said Morgan.ddddddddddddWith the spin department covered, and the two left-armers coming in and being a threat up front, it adds a huge dynamic to our game.A big strength is the fact we do bat deep. HELSINKI, Finland -- The owner of Finnish ice hockey team Jokerit says it will play in the Russian-led KHL starting with the 2014-15 season. Harry Harkimo, the chief owner of the Helsinki club for more than 20 years ago, says he will remain owner and manager of the club but his Russian business partners will have an option of buying team shares. Harkimo said on Friday the move to the KHL provided "a fantastic opportunity to develop the team to an even higher level." Finland will be the ninth country to join the KHL, formed in 2008. It comprises 20 Russian clubs and teams from Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Belarus. Jokerit has won six Finnish championships. Vettel was 0.168 seconds faster than Red Bull teammate Mark Webber around the Suzuka circuit. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was two tenths of a second off Vettel. "The car balance is decent, but I think we can still improve," Vettel said. YAS MARINA, Abu Dhabi -- Toto Wolff says he is split over how to react to Lewis Hamiltons race tactics at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after his driver ignored a direct order from fellow team boss Paddy Lowe.In one last attempt to force the championship back in his favour, Hamilton backed teammate Nico Rosberg into the chasing pack at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. If Rosberg dropped from second to fourth Hamilton would have been back in line for the title, but ultimately Rosberg finished second to take the championship. As it was a highly probable scenario [Hamiltons tactics], there was lots of discussion around it [ahead of the race], Wolff said. Not only this morning, but it was clear that it was one of the possible ways for Lewis to win the championship, if Nico came under threat from behind and thats exactly what happened. It didnt come as a surprise.Towards the end of the race, Mercedes technical boss Lowe came over the radio to tell Hamilton to speed up in the fear Sebastian Vettel, on the faster super-soft tyre, would close in and overtake both drivers. Our number one principle in three years -- it doesnt matter whether its the first race or the last -- is to ensure the win, Wolff added. Now you can question that, whether its the right principle going forward, but thats exactly what we did on the pit wall, there was two moments and this is why we asked him to increase the pace and it wasnt for any other reason.Mercedes has rules of engagement to cover sensitive scenarios such as Sundays race, including an order of command from the pit wall. Ordinarily only the drivers race engineer communicates over the pit-to-car radio, and Lowe is only brought in when the message is of the highest order.Yes, Paddy with the instruction is the highest escalation we have in our rules of engagement, Wolff confirmed. We have invented those ruless of engagement together, a while ago, on a table in Melbourne.ddddddddddddy disobeying the order and putting a one-two victory at risk, Hamilton was in breach of the teams internal rules. Wolff said he had not yet decided how to deal with his drivers disobedience.Once again, Im in two minds. The one half of me says we have 1,500 people in the team, 300,000 in Daimler that create values. They respect those values and undermining the structure in public means you are putting yourself before the team. Its very simple, it is like it is. And anarchy doesnt work within any team or any company. The other half of me says it was Lewis only chance of winning the championship at that stage and maybe you cannot demand a racing driver that is, one of the best, if not the best out there -- a real guard dog in the car -- to comply in a situation where his instincts cannot make him comply. Its about finding a solution how to solve that in the future because a precedent has been set. So let me sleep overnight and come up with a solution tomorrow.Previously there has been talk of a significant financial penalty -- and possibly a race suspension -- if Rosberg or Hamilton breach the rules of engagement. Asked if such measures were possible after Sundays race, Wolff said he was not ruling anything out.I think we need to look at the overall situation and say what does it mean? Everything is possible from lets change the rules for next year because it doesnt work in those critical races and maybe we want to give them even more freedom in racing each other -- we will consult with them -- to the more harsh side that we feel the values were not respected. This is 180 degrees and Im not sure yet where the needle is going to go. ' ' '
