GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- No. 23 Florida likely will be without quarterback Luke Del Rio against Southeastern Conference rival and 15th-ranked Tennessee next week.Del Rio injured his left knee in a 32-0 victory against North Texas on Saturday night, a huge setback for the Gators and their championship hopes. It doesnt look great, so well do whatever, said coach Jim McElwain, adding that former Purdue starter Austin Appleby would be the next guy up. Somebody else will play and well get some guys ready and move forward and get ready to go play next week. The injury overshadowed a dominant performance by Floridas defense, which allowed a school-record 53 yards on 50 plays. The previous mark was 59 yards allowed against Western Carolina in 2006.Defensive lineman Joshua Wheeler hit Del Rio low at the end of incomplete pass late in the third quarter, drawing a personal-foul penalty. Trainers and coach Jim McElwain rushed to the field as Del Rio ripped off his helmet. Del Rio eventually got up and walked to the locker room without any assistance. But that was hardly the end of it for Florida (3-0). McElwain, who clearly believed Wheelers hit was dirty, started yelling at the North Texas (1-2) sideline and had to be restrained by officials and then his players. When you see something like that, its my responsibility when their parents arent here to be their parents, McElwain said. I care about these kids. Theyre mine. I see something like that, it aint right. Both teams responded to McElwains tirade by stepping onto the field and moving toward the hash marks. He was trying to make a play and didnt mean to do it, North Texas coach Seth Littrell said. We are not trying to take cheap shots here.On the next play, Florida guard Martez Ivey was ejected for grabbing linebacker Fred Scott by the facemask during a run. Ivey will not be suspended for the first half of next weeks game against the Volunteers. It got a little gritty after that went down, Florida left tackle David Sharpe said.Del Rio completed 14 of 25 passes for 186 yards, with an interception.THE TAKEAWAYNorth Texas: Littrell, a former offensive assistant at Arizona, Indiana and North Carolina, is trying to change the culture at North Texas. Playing the Gators tough early -- the score was 19-0 through three quarters -- was a good start and something to build on in Littrells first season.Florida: The tune-up games are over. While handling UMass, Kentucky and North Texas, Floridas defense was dominant and its offense remains a work in progress -- especially without Del Rio. It remains to be seen how the Gators young and inexperienced offensive line will fare against the meat of the schedule.APPLEBYS TIMEAppleby started 11 games the last two years for the Boilermakers, leaving Purdue after 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. As a graduate transfer, he was eligible to play right away. You dont ever want to be somebodys caddie, Appleby said. You want the ball in your hands.McElwain said freshmen Kyle Trask and Feleipe Franks also may have to get ready to play.FOURTH-DOWN FAILURESFlorida could have scored more but got stopped on fourth-and-2 plays inside the 10-yard line. Mark Thompson was stuffed for no gain from the 5 in the first quarter, and Del Rio threw incomplete from the 8 in the second. The Gators are now 0 for 3 on fourth-down tries inside the 10 this season.NO CALLAWAYFlorida played without sophomore receiver Antonio Callaway, who missed the game because of bruised quadriceps. Callaway entered the game leading the Gators with 13 catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns. He is expected to play against Tennessee. The Gators got senior receiver Chris Thompson back, and he proved to be another deep threat. Thompson was suspended the first two games.POLL IMPLICATIONSFlorida should remain at or near No. 23 , making next weeks game at Tennessee the second in eight years in which both rivals were ranked. They also were both ranked in 2012. The Gators, who have won 11 in a row in the series, and Volunteers were both unranked the previous two meetings.UP NEXTNorth Texas: Opens Conference USA play at Rice (0-3). The Mean Green are 2-4 all-time against the Owls.Florida: Plays the Volunteers (3-0) for the 27th consecutive year. SAN FRANCISCO -- An exasperated San Francisco Giants team is still trying to find a way out of its post-All Star Game funk. Its hard to put into words how tough each (loss) is, Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford said.In the latest setback, Crawford had two extra-base hits and three RBI, and Buster Posey and Angel Pagan had three hits each, but the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied from a four-run deficit to complete a three-game sweep of the freefalling Giants with a 6-5 victory on Wednesday. The Giants, who on Tuesday fell out of first place in the NL West for the first time in 97 days, lost their fourth straight. They fell to 9-21, the worst record in the majors since the All-Star break. They dropped 1 1/2 games behind the Dodgers, who beat Philadelphia on Wednesday night.Asked if the Giants are nearing a breaking point, first baseman Brandon Belt said I think weve already reached that to a point.Weve had the meetings, weve done all kinds of stuff, were just not winning ballgames right now, so weve got to find a way to turn that around, he said. The Pirates won their fourth straight game and sixth in seven. They remain a game behind St. Louis, which beat Houston 8-2, in the race for the NL wild card.Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer, his 17th, which capped a six-run rally in the fifth inning that chased Giants starter Matt Cain (4-8).Cain had allowed one hit and had faced just one batter over the minimum with a 4-0 lead going into his disastrous fifth inning, when the Pirates scored six runs on four walks, three hits and a hit batsman. He was throwing so well and he just lost his release point, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.I probably stuck with him out there a little longer to be honest. I felt like he had enough to get through it. It didnt play out.Cains first pitch to McCutchen was an 89 mph fastball over the heart of the plate, and the Pirates center fielder pounced.I was trying to throw a fastball and left it right down the middle, Cain said.I think the biggest thing was I was trying to make too good of pitches instead of staying a little more aggressive, it just got me out of whack. I wasnt that far off in the inning. ... I just made a bad pitch to him (McCutchen). The losss typified the plight of a team with the best record in the majors going into the All-Star break that is now stuck in a downward spiral.ddddddddddddt seems like one game youve got the pitcher shutting the other guys down and the offense isnt doing anything and the next game the offense is doing OK and the leads are gone, Belt said. If we could get on the same page, then thats how we won a lot of those games in the first half.Jeff Locke (9-7) pitched a scoreless fifth.Tony Watson survived a scoreless ninth after the Giants loaded the bases with no outs for his seventh save in eight tries since taking over Pittsburghs closers role. After inducing Buster Posey to ground into a run-scoring double play, Watson got Crawford to fly out to shallow center and McCutchen made a game-ending running catch.Pagan extended his hitting streak to 15 games.LA STORYBochy hasnt announced whether hell use Mondays day off to skip Cains spot in the rotation for next weeks series against the Dodgers, but Cain is aware of the possibility. It would be hard for me, Cain said. Those are big games in LA and they are the games you look forward to and compete in. But we have to do whatever we have to do right now. We have to find a ways to get back right track and winning and get some mojo going.TRAINERS ROOMGiants: Bochy had Posey in the lineup for a day game after a night game after the All-Star catcher missed two consecutive games with lower back tightness. I dont want him going out there if theres any risk of making it worse, he says hes fine, Bochy said. ... Belt dropped to the ground after fouling a pitch off his right knee in the fifth inning but stayed in the game. He said he felt OK running first to third later in the inning but expects bruising. It didnt feel good, Belt said, theres not a lot of padding there.UP NEXTGiants: LHP Madison Bumgarner will pitch the series opener with the Mets on Thursday. The All-Star threw seven shutout innings against Baltimore in his most recent outing to snap a streak of five winless starts in which he was 0-3 and the Giants were 0-5. ' ' '
