DETROIT -- Maurice Cheeks is getting a third shot to be an NBA head coach. The Detroit Pistons are desperately hoping he makes the most of the opportunity he was given Monday, when they announced the hiring and did not disclose the length of his deal. Cheeks was 284-286 in the regular season and 5-11 during three postseasons while leading the Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers, a team he helped win an NBA title as a point guard. "After spending some time with Maurice, I was very impressed not only with his basketball knowledge but his communication and leadership skills," Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a statement. "We are very excited to have someone of his experience and talent help take this franchise into the future." Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson helped his friend, Gores, during the search as a consultant. "The leadership and player development qualities he brings as a former player and coach blends nicely with the roster we are building for the future," Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said in a statement. "Hes won an NBA championship, coached in two NBA Finals as an assistant coach and mentored some of the top young players in the NBA." Detroit has been looking for a new coach since it fired Lawrence Frank in April, a day after finishing 29-53. Frank was 54-94 in two seasons with the Pistons. Cheeks becomes the franchises fourth coach in six seasons -- following Frank, John Kuester and Michael Curry -- and ninth since the 1999-2000 season. The once-proud Pistons are hoping Cheeks can help them snap a four-season post-season drought. Since Detroit won an NBA title in 2004, it has slipped in the standings and with bodies in seats. The Pistons made their sixth straight Eastern Conference finals appearance in 2008, had a first-round exit the following year against the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers and have lost an average of 50-plus games the last four years. After Flip Saunders was fired in 2008, Michael Curry lasted only one season as coach and John Kuester made it through two years, as did Frank. Gores has stressed the importance of this off-season, which has the potential to push the Pistons in a positive direction. Detroit is building around Andre Drummond, Greg Monroe and Brandon Knight. It plans to build around that nucleus of young talent with the No. 8 pick overall in the NBA draft this month and space under the salary cap that was created by trading away Ben Gordon last off-season and Tayshaun Prince during the regular season. The Pistons are counting on Cheeks to provide stability after he was fired by two franchises following three-plus seasons. Philadelphia let him go early in the 2008-09 season with a 9-14 record and Portland sent him away more than midway through the 2004-05 with a 22-33 record. He was 122-147 with the 76ers and 162-139 with the Trail Blazers over six full seasons and parts of two seasons. The 56-year-old Cheeks spent the past four seasons as an Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach. The Chicago native was a four-time All-Star over 15 seasons in the NBA, helping the Sixers win a championship in 1983. He started his post-playing career with the Quad City Thunder, helping the team win the CBA title in 1994, and later went on to be a Sixers assistant for John Lucas, Johnny Davis and Larry Brown -- one of Detroits many coaches in recent years. DENVER -- Chris Carters homer broke one tie to forge another, and set up a showdown on the last day of the season for the NL home run crown.Carter hit a tiebreaking home run with two outs in the top of the 10th inning, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.Carters 41st homer of the season came on a 3-2 pitch against Adam Ottavino (1-3) and salvaged a victory after the Milwaukee bullpen gave up a three-run lead in the eighth and ninth. He also tied Colorados Nolan Arenado for the NL lead in long balls. Arenado hit his 41st Friday night but went 0 for 5 in Saturdays loss. The two will decide Sunday who wins the home run crown or if it ends in a tie like last year when Arenado and Bryce Harper finished with 42 each.Im not going to change anything, Carter said. Im just going to keep everything the same thing. Trying to get a pitch up in the zone and get the barrel to it. Its definitely crazy were playing against each other. His 41st home run turned the game around after the Rockies tied it. He worked Ottavino to a full count before hitting a slider 404 feet to left.I threw it where I wanted. He hadnt given me any indication he was going to hit it, so I wasnt too careful there, trying to throw a strike, Ottavino said. I regret it now, but in the moment I was pretty comfortable throwing it.Colorados rally spoiled a strong outing for the Brewers Wily Peralta, who tossed six scoreless innings to close out his season. Peralta recorded his fourth straight quality start, and ninth in his last 10 outings. He appeared headed for a win after the Brewers built a 3-0 lead. That was a heck of an effort from Wily, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. He put up six scoreless innings here against a good lineup; its a great finish for Wily.Hernan Perez made it 1-0 in the fifth when he scored on Martin Maldonados bunt single off Rocckies starter Jeff Hoffman.dddddddddddd. Ryan Braun, who finished with two hits, had an RBI double in the seventh and scored on Perezs single. The Rockies scored twice in the eighth off Corey Knebel but left two runners on. They tied it against Tyler Thornburg (7-5) in the ninth on pinch-hitter Tom Murphys RBI double. The Rockies got the tying run to second with one out in the bottom of the 10th but Jacob Barnes struck out David Dahl and got Jordan Patterson to line out to right to pick up his first save.TRAINERS ROOMRockies: OF Gerardo Parra had a platelet-rich plasma injection into his left ankle on Friday and is done for the season.CENTURY MARKCarlos Gonzalez had a run-scoring single in the eighth to give him 100 RBI on the season. It is just the second time he has reached the mark. He had 117 in 2010 and 97 last year when he hit 40 home runs.It took a while for him to reach the mark. He hadnt driven in a run since Sept. 21 despite playing nearly every day.Its beautiful, man. I think its been a while since I had that 99, Gonzalez said. I always joke about it with the guys that when Im trying to reach 99, it always gives me a hard time to reach the next one. If its nine RBI and you want to get to 10, you just hit really hard. Im really happy.GREAT STARTPatterson didnt get the key hit in the 10th but he finished with three singles. It was his first start at first base and his second start overall. Its good to see Jordan get a start, get some at-bats, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. He had a nice play over there, so it went well.UP NEXTBrewers: RHP Tyler Cravy (0-1, 2.39) will start Sunday in what Counsell called a bullpen day.Rockies: Rookie RHP German Marquez (1-1, 6.14) will make his third start of the season and sixth appearance.
