Freshmen quarterbacks have shown they can play significant roles on national championship teams and there will be at least one under center -- and maybe more -- when the college football season kicks off this week.Florida States Jameis Winston stepped into the spotlight in 2013. He became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy as he led the Seminoles to a 14-0 season and the schools third title. The following year, Ohio States J.T. Barrett went 11-1 as the starting quarterback before suffering a knee injury. This year, the fourth-ranked Seminoles are turning the offense over to another freshman, Deondre Francoios.Going into the first full week of action, here is a look at the freshman who will be under center and few others that might be for their schools openers:---- Deondre Francois, Florida State. Francois, who will start on Monday for the fourth-ranked Seminoles against No. 11 Mississippi, has continued to impress coaches and teammates with his athleticism and poise. He was the top dual threat prep quarterback in the nation when he was recruited in 2015 and showed why by throwing for two touchdowns in the spring game.- JMar Smith, Louisiana Tech. Smith is getting the start for Saturdays game at Arkansas after senior Ryan Higgins was suspended for driving while intoxicated last month. The redshirt freshmen began preseason camp at third string but moved up after displaying a strong arm and mobility in the pocket. This is the fourth straight season that Louisiana Tech has had a different starting quarterback for its opener.- Chason Virgil, Fresno State. Virgil, who was redshirted last year after a shoulder injury limited him to three games, has maintained a firm grip on the starting spot throughout preseason practices. Virgil was 31 of 56 for 298 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions last season. Saturdays game at Nebraska will be his second collegiate start.- Blake Barnett, Alabama. In portions of practice open to the media this week Barnett and Cooper Bateman have both taken snaps with the first team as the defending national champions prepare for Saturdays game against No. 20 Southern Cal. Coach Nick Saban has gone with the most experienced candidate -- the previous years backup -- the past two seasons. Bateman is the only player on Alabamas roster who has thrown a pass.- Shane Buechele, Texas. Coach Charlie Strong has said that he will not reveal the starter until right before kickoff on Sunday against No. 10 Notre Dame. Buechele was an early enrollee and threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns during the spring game. He also made the Big 12 commissioners honor roll for the spring semester.- Aaron Winchester, Georgia State. Winchester was redshirted last year but showed he was ready to compete for the starting spot by throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for another in the spring game. Utah transfer Conner Manning, a junior, still might get the nod for Fridays game against Ball State, but coach Trent Miles has declined to name a starter until right before kickoff. Billy Smith Jersey . Once again, DeLaet finished tied for second at a PGA Tour stop on the weekend, this time at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The pride of Weyburn, Sask. Scott Mayfield Jersey . Any real chance at payback wont come until the playoff. Still, Pittsburgh knows its taut 3-2 win over the Bruins on Wednesday night is a pretty good place to start laying the groundwork. "They are a very good defensive team," Penguins forward Brandon Sutter said. http://www.islanderssale.com/authentic-jordan-eberle-islanders-jersey/ . In taking its goal tally to 99 in all competitions already this season, City delivered another demonstration of its lethal firepower at Etihad Stadium to set up a fourth-round match at home to another second-tier team -- Watford. Nick Leddy Jersey . Brazilian national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has confirmed that the veteran goalkeeper is set to join Toronto on loan, saying it will help him be ready for the World Cup. Brock Nelson Jersey .Y. -- Marcell Dareus and the Buffalo Bills defence made life miserable for Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jason Vargas kept throwing strikes and catcher Chris Iannetta kept taking his walks -- a winning formula for the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Vargas scattered four hits through seven scoreless innings, Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick each hit two-run doubles, and the Los Angeles Angels coaxed a pair of bases-loaded walks out of Jake Peavy in the fourth inning of a 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Vargas (3-3) struck out six and walked three while helping the Angels gain a split of the four-game series. The middle of the Chicago lineup -- Alex Rios, Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko -- were a combined 0 for 8 with a walk against the left-hander, who posted his first victory in six career starts against the White Sox. "When youve got three guys like that in a lineup, the biggest key is just to try and keep guys off base when they come up to the plate because it limits the damage that theyre able to do," Vargas said. "When you can do that, you have more confidence in what you can go about doing with them, and theres more room for error." Peavy (5-2) gave up four runs, four hits and five walks over six innings after going 4-0 with a 2.10 ERA in his previous five starts. The 2007 NL Cy Young winner is 0-4 with a 6.06 ERA in six career starts against the Angels. "I felt really good today, and thats the most frustrating part for me," Peavy said. "I went out there with a good game plan and felt like we could execute, but I just didnt quite execute well enough. My slider was the best its been all year, so Ive got some positives to take out of it. Its just hard to be positive right now." Los Angeles opened the scoring in the third when Iannetta drew a leadoff walk, J.B. Shuck followed with a single and Aybar drove both of them in with his double to right before he was erased in a rundown. "Obviously the walks are going to kill you, especially leading off an inning. Theres no excuse for that," Peavy said. "I have all the respect in the world for Chris Iannetta. Hes got a great eye, theres no doubt about it. But good eye or nothing, Ive got to throw the ball where he has to swing the bat." Peavy, who threw 83 of his 117 pitches in the first four innings, walked four more batters in the fourth -- including Iannetta and Aybar with the bases loaded -- and the Angels increased the margin to 4-0. Two innings laater, Peavy struck out the side on 18 pitches.dddddddddddd Iannettas second walk was his 14th in a span of 33 plate appearances, including four on Saturday. He has 27 overall, just two fewer than he had last season in 221 plate appearances. His career high is 70, with Colorado in 2011. "Hes walking a lot," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I mean, if you look at Chris history, theres no doubt the walk is in his game. Even when he was going through that little rough spot earlier in the season, he still drew some walks. I think its great plate discipline, especially when youre not swinging the bat that well." Rios drove in Chicagos first run with an eighth-inning double against Dane De La Rosa. It extended his hitting streak to 14 games, eclipsing his previous best in 2006 with Toronto. Ernesto Frieri was called in to protect a 4-1 lead, trying to get his second four-out save in two days after giving up a three-run homer in the eighth against Hector Gimenez on Saturday before closing that one out. The right-hander walked three batters in the ninth this time before notching his ninth save in 10 attempts overall. Frieri gave up a sacrifice fly by Alejandro De Aza before retiring Alexei Ramirez on a flyball to end it. Kendrick gave Frieri a couple of insurance runs in the eighth with his double inside third base against rookie Brian Omogrosso. NOTES: Peavy had issued eight walks in 45 2-3 innings over his seven previous starts this season. The three-time All-Star, who led the NL in strikeouts in 2005 and 2007 with San Diego, got the 1,800th of his career in the first inning when he caught Mike Trout looking. ... INF Chris Nelson was added to the Angels 25-man roster, one day after he was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees. They are the third team hes been with this season, including Colorado. ... The Angels optioned 3B Luis Jimenez to Triple-A Salt Lake, and sent outright RHP Barry Enright to Salt Lake after he cleared waivers. Enright had been designated for assignment on May 16, one day after giving up four runs in two-plus innings against Kansas City in a 9-5 loss. ... Dunn returned to the lineup as the designated hitter, after leaving Saturdays game in the fifth inning because of back spasms. He finished 0 for 3 with three strikeouts and a walk. ... The White Sox return home to start an eight-game homestand on Monday against Boston. ' ' '
