FORT WORTH, Texas -- Hal Wasson sat in the den of Ken and Lorrie Hills home in Southlake, Texas, in the spring of 2014 and hoped to send their son a message.Kenny Hill had just been suspended for the final week of Texas A&Ms spring practices after his arrest for public intoxication. The mistake was made worse by a photo online showing Hill passed out in a planter outside a College Station bar.Wasson, Hills coach at Southlake Carroll High School, reminded an embarrassed Hill how much he loves and cares about him. And the coach made one request.Go look at yourself in the mirror right now. Tell me what you see.He looked at me like Id lost my mind, Wasson said. But Hill listened. He stood up. He looked in a mirror.Youre the face of an incredible program, Wasson told him. Just remember that. Before Kenny Trill mania, before his roller-coaster rise and even more rapid downfall at A&M, Hill was a 19-year-old kid still trying to figure out the burden of stardom. When it all crumbled, he needed a year and a half out of the spotlight to get his life back on track.Today, Hill is chasing a comeback at TCU and four games into a successful-so-far reboot. Hes back to playing like one of college footballs most talented gunslingers. Hes about to be back in the national spotlight, starting this weekend against Oklahoma. And hes determined to prove, this time, he can handle it.I knew if I got a chance, I could get back to this point, Hill said.Hill still remembers his month on top of the world at Texas A&M in vivid detail. He remembers Blow Up by J. Cole was the last song blasting in the locker room before he took the field for his fateful, season-opening game against South Carolina. This is a song for my haters Yeah, you got me feeling like the greatest Im about to blow upHill remembers telling a grad assistant during warm-ups: Dude, Im feeling myself today. He would complete 44 passes for 511 yards in a 52-28 rout of a preseason top-10 foe.I was just locked in, Hill said. To have everything clicking like that is just the greatest feeling. He was asked last month to envision a different start to The Kenny Hill Story: What if he had played just OK that night instead of incredible? To just start off all right and then build? Instead of being way up there at the jump? he wondered, smiling. Yeah, that probably wouldve helped.Hill was too good too fast, and he fell too hard. When he couldnt cope, he screwed up. He became a cautionary tale of believing September hype. One of Hills challenges in College Station: He followed Johnny Football. He was a freshman backup during the circus that was Johnny Manziels post-Heisman Trophy year. Whether or not Manziel was a poor role model for the young quarterback -- as TCU co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham argued last month -- the fact is Hill replaced a program-changer.That dude was unbelievable. Ive never ... Ive never seen anything like it, Hill said. The stuff he was doing was ridiculous. To go from such a transcendent player in that program, whoever was next, youre kind of held to a very high standard. It really wouldve been tough for anybody to come in.A little tougher, too, when the successor breaks Manziels single-game passing record in his first start.Back home in Southlake, Wasson cringed when he started hearing Heisman talk. No matter who you are or how mature you might be, he says, that stuff can blow you up in a bad way.He sent Hill a text message after the South Carolina game offering a warning: Its never as good or bad as you think. Stay the course. In the weeks after that game, during the Aggies 5-0 start to the 2014 season, Hill figured out why Manziel had to take online classes. Enormous fame was a big change. On campus, classmates and even groundskeepers were hounding Hill for photos and autographs.Hills relationship with the public is a topic he keeps coming back to when he looks back on the A&M days. One of his guilty pleasures during his rise: reading all his Twitter mentions and Instagram comments. He sought out the praise. And when he started to struggle, the feedback was brutal. He read all of that, too. Its a different deal, he says, when its your name. And everything became tougher when A&M faced three top-12 teams in a row. Hill threw three interceptions in a 48-31 loss at Mississippi State. A week later, in front of an SEC-record crowd of 110,000, Hill had three turnovers and Ole Miss scored on two of them in a 35-20 win.The wheels fell off the bandwagon the following week with a 59-0 loss at Alabama. Hill threw for 138 yards, his confidence clearly shaken.I had never lost three games in a row in my life in anything, he said.A week later, A&M coach Kevin Sumlin suspended Hill two games for a still-undisclosed violation of team rules. Whatever it was, this latest screw-up was the last straw. Freshman Kyle Allen took over the QB job. Hill never played another game for the Aggies. You go from Heisman talk to, dog, youre a joke, Hill said.Hills former high school coach says the pressure of fame and stress of losing got to him. When you start stressing, crazy stuff starts happening, Wasson said. I think it was a storm of a lot of stress involved with a lot of folks, and they dealt with it in different ways.A lot of his stuff was self-inflicted. Hes always been a good, morally strong guy. But he made mistakes. He got mixed up.Two months after Hill was one of the hottest names in college football, he dropped out of Texas A&M.I will vouch for Kenny Hill anywhere, anytime, Wasson said. What happened down there is sad to me, because thats not who he is. Thats not him.Which is precisely what he told TCU coach Gary Patterson and offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie.Patterson and Cumbie had a plan for carefully bringing Hill into the fold. Step 1: They encouraged Hill to take a break from the limelight. He spent the spring semester taking classes at Tarrant County College. If hed have come right here, there always would have been somebody asking about him, Patterson said. It didnt need to be about him. He needed to get away from it and take a deep breath. His staff did a thorough background check, and Patterson wasnt signing off on the transfer until Hill sat down with him and fully explained himself. Hill was a bit nervous about that meeting.Going into it, Cumbie said, Man, he already knows everything that happened. So just tell him straight up what happened, Hill said. Thats what I did. That was tough. I didnt really want to talk about it. I didnt want to think about it.But he owned his errors. And when Hill enrolled at TCU in June of 2015, he signed up for a year of anonymity. He was the practice-squad quarterback. He earned As and Bs and never caused problems while building trust with his teammates.Once I did meet him, said TCU defensive end Josh Carraway, I realized this isnt the guy they were talking about at A&M that was doing bad stuff. Hes a really great guy.Hill learned plenty from watching TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin handle big expectations with ease.Thats the beauty of Trevone: hed walk in here laughing and smiling, still a goofball, Cumbie said. He did not let successes or failures change him.Hill admired Boykins leadership while also dealing with an up-and-down season. Boykin respected the fact Hill embraced his minor role.Kenny did really well, Boykin said. He did all the right things to keep himself out of trouble and be a positive person. I dont know too many Heisman candidates on scout team.Hill earned the starting job this offseason, and Patterson named him the starter Aug. 25. TCUs high-speed offense couldnt fit Hill any better. He ranks No. 3 nationally in total offense (1,653 yards) and threw for 452 yards last week against SMU, the second most in his career behind the South Carolina debut.Hills maturity has already been tested a few times this season. He threw two straight picks against South Dakota State and irked Patterson by laughing it off when he retreated to the sideline. Hill was merely trying to convey that, this time, he wasnt losing his cool.A week later against Arkansas, one of Hills touchdown celebrations was perceived as a throat slash, which cost TCU critical field position late in an eventual overtime loss. Patterson stood up for him on that one, because Hill has earned the benefit of the doubt from this team.Hes been a professional ever since hes been here, Patterson said. Hes done everything right.Hill doesnt sound like a kid whod change a thing, either. He doesnt hesitate to say that, all things considered, the A&M stint was one of the coolest experiences Ive been through. Hes better prepared today to be the face of another big-time program. And Wasson, who kept his faith throughout, knows this: Hill can look in the mirror and feel proud again. Samuel Morin Flyers Jersey . Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost thinks the teams technical director, James Key, can emulate Red Bull legend Adrian Newey.?Key is highly regarded in the paddock, with Toro Rossos results last year and in the opening half of 2016 largely credited to his chassis designs. This year has been particularly impressive, with the team regularly scoring points despite using a 2015-spec Ferrari engine.Tost thinks Keys recent success shows he has the qualities to match Newey in future.James has developed a lot in the last few years, and he has built up an excellent team around him, Tost is quoted as saying by F1.com. Adrian Newey is simply much more experienced, but I am convinced that James will be one of the top technical personalities in F1 in a couple of years.Asked whether Key can succeed Newey as F1s most prominent designer, Tosst added: Why not? But it will depend much on where the regulations go.ddddddddddddAs always in life it is a matter of being in the right place at the right time. The Englishmans good standing in the paddock meant he was quickly linked with a move to Ferrari this year, even before the departure of technical chief James Allison last month. And we want to keep it [the length of the contract] confidential. ' ' '
