New year, same hypothetical: Ask 100 casual fantasy football players how to correctly draft handcuffs and 90 will give you the same advice: Pick the dude backing up the running back you got in the first round.Although thats basically the concept behind handcuffing, its really not that cut and dried. Some No. 2 tailbacks are good, while others arent. Some have a clear path to a workhorse share of the backfield touches, while others would work out of a committee. And what about wide receivers and tight ends? Most of your opponents wont be thinking about handcuffs at other positions, which is an area where you can beat them on draft day. When considering handcuffs, the best game plan is to select players with high ceilings should the player ahead of them on the depth chart miss time. For example, should Devonta Freeman get hurt, Tevin Coleman would handle roughly 20 touches per game in Atlanta. If Lamar Miller goes down, however, plodder Alfred Blue would be the favorite for early-down work, but hed split touches with rookie Tyler Ervin and possibly Jonathan Grimes. If you were the guy who picked Miller, dont cross Coleman off your list in favor of upgrading Blue. Pick the guy who can win you a league championship, not a guy barely worth flex consideration.Below are the top handcuffs worth monitoring in the mid-to-late rounds of your draft. The fantasy value of each will skyrocket if the teammate above him on the depth chart is injured. Youll notice that I ignored players who will be drafted too early to be considered handcuff material (e.g. Giovani Bernard, DeAngelo Williams, Charles Sims). For updated handcuff information and advice throughout the season, be sure to check out our fantasy depth charts, broken down by position:Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight endBeat your league mates to the punch by stashing these players on your bench.Tevin Coleman, RB, Atlanta Falcons I need to start by expressing that this has zero to do with my opinion of Devonta Freeman. Frankly, its shocking how little credit the fantasy community is giving a guy who was easily the games top running back last season. That said, if Freeman were to go down with an injury, Coleman would skyrocket into the RB1 discussion. The 2015 third-round pick actually won the teams lead back gig as a rookie last season, but a Week 2 rib injury allowed Freeman to steal the job away. Upon his return, Coleman was nothing more than a backup, but showed flashes. He posted a healthy 4.5 yards per carry (YPC) and was terrific against base defenses. Coleman is going to be pricier than the other handcuffs we discuss, but he has the upside to warrant your consideration.Josh Doctson, WR, Washington Redskins Doctson is perhaps the most intriguing non-running back handcuff this season. Washingtons first-round draft pick is recovering from a foot injury and will begin his career buried behind DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Jamison Crowder on the teams depth chart. Of course, as recent history has shown, the cream tends to rise (think Keenan Allen in 2013 and Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014). Washington is going to throw the ball plenty and, at worst, figures to be a mid-pack scoring offense. At 6-foot-2, Doctson is easily the clubs tallest receiver. In the event of an injury to Jackson or Garcon, the rookie would be in line for a near-every-down role and significant work near the goal line. Expect Doctsons rookie campaign to come in like a lamb and go out like a lion.Jerick McKinnon, RB, Minnesota Vikings The 2015 season was a rough one at the running back position, but it also meant that many reserve backs ended up in fantasy lineups. Unfortunately for those who stashed McKinnon, Adrian Peterson appeared in all 16 of Minnesotas games, leaving the former without a real opportunity to emerge. To make my point here, bear with me as I remind you that Devonta Freeman (Tevin Coleman), DeAngelo Williams (LeVeon Bell), David Johnson (Chris Johnson), Darren McFadden (Joseph Randle), Ronnie Hillman (C.J. Anderson), Jeremy Langford (Matt Forte), James Starks (Eddie Lacy), Thomas Rawls (Marshawn Lynch), Karlos Williams (LeSean McCoy), Charcandrick West/Spencer Ware (Jamaal Charles), Javorius Allen (Justin Forsett), Tim Hightower (Mark Ingram) and Shaun Draughn (Carlos Hyde) were among the backs who began 2015 on the bench but ended up making a significant fantasy impact.Minnesota did make an effort to get McKinnon more involved down the stretch. In fact, thanks to a big role as a receiver, he ranked sixth among backs in fantasy points during the final three weeks of the season. McKinnon is only 24 years old and a freak athlete with top-end strength, speed and explosiveness. If Peterson, who is 31 years old and just completed the sixth 300-plus-touch season of his career, were to miss time, McKinnon would certainly jump into the RB1 discussion.DeAndre Washington, Oakland Raiders Wendell Smallwood, Philadelphia Eagles Devontae Booker, Denver Broncos Paul Perkins, New York Giants Keith Marshall, Washington Redskins Considering their current standing, its possible each of these rookie backs will spend time in fantasy lineups this season. In the event of a Latavius Murray injury, Washington would be the heavy favorite for feature-back duties. If oft-injured Ryan Mathews goes down, Smallwood would handle most of the carries, with Darren Sproles chipping in on passing downs. Ronnie Hillman might get the first look if C.J. Anderson were to go down, but hes not good. It wouldnt take Booker long to take full control of the Denver backfield. Perkins only roadblock to lead back duties in New York is 31-year-old Rashad Jennings. Marshall was a seventh-round pick, but has absurd 4.31 wheels to go with his 5-11, 219-pound frame. Matt Jones rough rookie campaign makes Marshall even more intriguing. Note that I couldve easily included the likes of C.J. Prosise, Kenneth Dixon and Jordan Howard here, but the path to a massive snap count isnt quite as clear.Martellus Bennett, TE, New England Patriots The lone tight end on our list. Whats intriguing about Bennett is that he has standalone value as a TE2 (with TE1 upside), but would also leap into the top three in the event of an injury to Rob Gronkowski. Since 2010, the Patriots have had a second tight end on the field a league-high 46 percent of the time when passing. That includes a rate of 78 percent during a 2011 campaign that saw both Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez (in 14 games) finish as top-three fantasy tight ends. The duo combined for 169 receptions, 2,237 yards and 24 touchdowns. Bennett, who caught 90 passes back in 2014, is also a terrific blocker, which all but assures him a significant role. I usually dont recommend carrying a second tight end on your roster, but Bennett qualifies as an exception to that rule.Breshad Perriman, WR, Baltimore Ravens Perriman missed his entire rookie season due to a PCL injury, and a partially torn ACL all but assures he wont play a significant role early on this season. As the likes of Josh Gordon, Martavis Bryant and Odell Beckham Jr. have taught us, thats not necessarily a death knell to his fantasy appeal. Because he has yet to see the field, its easy to forget that Perriman has a massive ceiling. Baltimores 2015 first-round pick is 6-foot-2, 215 pounds and ran a ridiculous 4.26 40-yard dash. The persistent injuries are a concern, but once healthy, its not inconceivable that Perriman will blow past Kamar Aiken, Mike Wallace and possibly even Steve Smith Sr. on the target totem pole. Again, expect a slow start, but Perrimans upside makes him worth your attention in the later rounds.Tim Hightower, RB, New Orleans Saints This one should seem obvious, but considering that Hightower is currently going undrafted in standard-sized leagues, hes worth mentioning. During Weeks 1-13 last season, Hightower played a grand total of 19 snaps. Things changed when Mark Ingram went down for the season in Week 13. Hightower played 164 snaps during the final four weeks of the season, racking up 456 yards and four touchdowns on 96 touches during the span. Only David Johnson scored more fantasy points. Hightower, who is now 30 years old, has little to no standalone value, but hed certainly be back in the RB1 discussion if Ingram were to go down with an injury.James Starks, RB, Green Bay Packers Like Hightower, Starks is a veteran not to forget. As ESPN NFL Nation Packers reporter Rob Demovsky recently pointed out, the Packers didnt give Starks $3 million per year to not play. Granted, theres plenty of snaps to be had behind Lacy, but Starks primary fantasy appeal is as a high-end handcuff. If Lacy were to miss time -- or continue to struggle with his conditioning/weight -- Starks has little competition for a massive workload. During the six weeks he played at least half of the snaps or had double-digit carries, Starks racked up 595 yards and five touchdowns on 105 touches and was fantasys No. 6 scoring back. Currently going undrafted in most leagues, hes a cheap, high-ceiling flier in the late rounds.Phillip Dorsett, WR, Indianapolis Colts Dorsett is generating some hype this summer, but he remains a player who you can acquire in the double-digit rounds. In addition to being able to supply standalone value in the Colts new-look three-wide offense, Dorsett is a T.Y. Hilton or Donte Moncrief injury away from a 20-plus percent target share in one of the games top pass offenses. The 2015 first-round pick is on the small side at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds, but his 4.33 wheels are sure to lead to plenty of deep shots. As long as Andrew Luck is under center, the Colts high-volume, pass-heavy offense is sure to generate a lot of points. Dorsett is in a great situation as is, but adding to his appeal is elite handcuff status.Malcolm Brown, RB, Los Angeles Rams How about a deep sleeper? Todd Gurley is the clear workhorse in a Rams offense sure to lean extremely heavily on its run game. Tre Mason was supposed to be the next man up, but off-field issues have put his career in jeopardy. Benjamin Cunningham is an underrated back, but does most of his damage on passing downs. That leaves intriguing Brown as the priority add in the event of a Gurley injury. Mostly an unknown, Brown went undrafted back in 2015, but sports a 5-foot-11, 224-pound frame and will do most his damage between the tackles. Brown doesnt have great top-end speed, but is a tough runner who is also a capable blocker and pass-catcher. Brown is worth late-round consideration in deep season-long and dynasty formats.Others to monitor: Sammie Coates, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers; Cameron Artis-Payne, RB, Carolina Panthers; Austin Hooper, TE, Atlanta Falcons; Chris Conley, WR, Chiefs; AJ McCarron, QB, Cincinnati Bengals; Gavin Escobar, TE, Dallas Cowboys; MyCole Pruitt, TE, Minnesota Vikings; Erik Swoope, TE, Indianapolis Colts; James White, RB, New England Patriots; Ryan Nassib, QB, New York Giants; Hunter Henry, TE, San Diego Chargers; Niles Paul, TE, Washington Redskins; Geno Smith, QB, New York Jets.
