GENEVA -- Long-time FIFA medical director Jiri Dvorak said his departure last week was abrupt, suggesting it could affect global health programs he started.It was not my intention to leave FIFA so abruptly, Dvorak, who worked 22 years with FIFA, said in a statement on Friday.FIFA announced on Nov. 2 that Dvorak had left that day as chief medical officer and chairman of FIFAs Medical Assessment and Research Centre.The Czech-born neurologist oversaw programs including FIFA 11+ to prevent injuries, and FIFA 11 for Health to help stop disease spreading.Both programs are highly effective and (meant) cost savings for the community, Dvorak said, adding he felt responsible for hundreds of collaborators around the world whom I have motivated to implement professionally the preventive programs.Dvorak ensured FIFA hosted a conference on concussion injuries in Zurich in 2012, and also helped to organize FIFAs three-yearly medical congress, first held in 2009. He planned a fourth edition in Moscow on the sidelines of the 2018 World Cup.FIFA said Friday no decision had yet been taken on organizing future medical events.It is unclear if FIFA wants Dvoraks successor to have a similarly pro-active role outside of soccer tournaments it organizes.FIFA said last week it would soon announce a new head of FIFAs medical department, which is in charge of the medical services and the anti-doping program.A further change in FIFAs long-standing oversight of medical issues is expected next year.FIFA medical committee chairman Michel DHooghe is due for re-election in April as a European delegate on the FIFA Council. The Belgian doctor is expected to stand down after 29 years on the ruling committee.Dvoraks exit from FIFA follows the departure of several senior managers who were appointed during Sepp Blatters 17-year presidency.
