MELBOURNE, Australia -- Australia improved its chances of qualifying for a third consecutive World Cup with a 4-0 win over Jordan and South Korea moved within a point of progressing for the eighth straight time after edging Uzbekistan 1-0 in Asian qualifiers on Tuesday. Midfielder Robbie Kruse scored a goal and set up two others as Australia earned the vital win and moved into second spot in Group B with 10 points, four behind already-qualified Japan and one ahead of Oman. Jordan has seven points, while Iraq had five ahead of its match with Japan later Tuesday. South Korea leads Group A with 14 points, three clear of Uzbekistan, which conceded a first-half own goal by Akmal Shorakhmedov in Seoul. The result means South Korea needs only one point from their last group match to secure a place at Brazil 2014. It was a deserved win for the host in a game played at a frantic pace. South Korea broke the deadlock just before halftime as Shorakhmedov headed a Kim Young-gwon cross firmly into his own net. A win would have ensured Uzbekistans first appearance at the World Cup. Both leading teams are at home next week, with South Korea hosting Iran and Uzbekistan against Qatar. The top two from the group qualify automatically for Brazil. The third-place teams go into a playoff for an intercontinental qualifying series. Japan ensured its spot at Brazil last week with a last-minute equalizer in a 1-1 draw at home against the Australians. That left Australia needing wins at home against Jordan and Iraq to guarantee second spot in the group. Midfielders Mark Bresciano scored in the 15th minute in Melbourne and Tim Cahill found the net in the 61st -- both off Kruse passes. Kruse drove in a shot from close range in the 77th minute and captain Lucas Neill claimed his first-ever international goal shortly before fulltime. Two-time World Cup veteran and former Serie A playmaker Bresciano scored the opening goal when he latched onto a lofted centring pass from Kruse to fire the ball past Jordan goalkeeper Amer Shafi. "This is the time when it needs to click," Bresciano said. "We know exactly what were playing for. Weve got a must-win game next week in Sydney." Jordan was able to threaten at times, with Shadi Abu Hashhash and Adnan Suleiman particularly dangerous, but the Australian defence was equal to the task and Bayer Leverkusen forward Kruse was constantly making inroads in counterattack. "It was a wonderful performance, but it means nothing if we dont get the goal next week," Kruse said. Group D, or the so-called group of death, was full of upsets and suspense until the very end of their League of Legends World Championships round-robin stage. With three potential world-class teams -- Team SoloMid, Samsung Galaxy and Royal Never Give Up -- and one massive European underdog, Splyce, it was the ultimate prove it group -- each team was touted and hyped, but unproven.Splyce and TSM provided plenty of feel-good moments, but ultimately Samsung Galaxy and RNG prevailed into the quarterfinals.Winner of the day: Samsung GalaxySamsung Galaxy lived up to their lofty expectations. The team performed brilliantly with an undefeated Saturday, a record of 5-1 and the top seed out of the group. Not only did the team win, but they won in dominant fashion -- two victories inside the 20-minute window. Kang Ambition Chang-yong carried most of the lane phase to overcome many of the bottom-lane deficiencies and kept Samsung Galaxy even into the mid game. From there, it was a complete team snowball. From the support to the middle lane, everyones contributions led to a dominating group-stage exit for Samsung Galaxy.Loser of the day: Team SoloMidThe North American all-star lineup exited the group stage with a Week 2 record of 1-2 and the taste of bitter disappointment after they failed to capitalize on a solid Week 1. In both of their losses against Samsung Galaxy and RNG, TSM failed to play at their own pace or with their offensive identity. While Yiliang Peter Doublelift Peng did his paart on the offensive end, the rest of the lineup fell flat.ddddddddddddAgainst Samsung Galaxy, both S?ren Bjergsen Bjerg and Kevin Hauntzer Yarnell played poorly. From the lane phase to the most critical team engagements, Bjergsen and Hauntzer contributed little at key moments -- either one failed in positioning or was too passive in an approach. Against RNG, it was just a wash. Outside of one great fight to potentially start a comeback, it was all RNG from the first minute.Overall, the North American lineup did not recognize the oppositions defenses or take advantage of the miscues that the enemy provided. It was an uncharacteristically poor showing from the usually strong team.Team that needed improvement: Royal Never Give UpRNG suffered a 23-minute battering from Samsung Galaxy, a defeat from Splyce and needed a final game against TSM to qualify out of the group stage. It was a humbling day for the team-fighting super squad, but it was still a qualification. There are so many holes in RNG: early game (the bottom lane), rotations and overall map control. RNGs team-fighting prowess was well-documented, but if the team cannot enter the mid game without any momentum, it was negated. The team needs a full early-game draft makeover and aggression from either the jungle or the middle lane, or RNG will not survive past the first round of the quarterfinals. ' ' '
