HOCKENHEIM, Germany -- Nico Rosberg set the fastest time during the opening practice session for the German Grand Prix as Mercedes held an advantage of more than one second over their nearest rival.Rosberg set a 1:15.517 on new super-soft tyres, 0.326s faster than the best effort by teammate Lewis Hamilton just moments later and over 1.150s faster than Sebastian Vettels Ferrari in third. Rosbergs lap was also a second faster than the his pole position lap at the same track two years ago, but still more than two seconds slower than Hockenheims qualifying lap record set by Michael Schumacher in 2004.Of more relevance to this weekend, was the gap to Ferrari and Red Bull, which also used the same compound tyres as the Mercedes for their quick laps. In fact, all of the top 11 cars set their time on super-soft tyres, while only Felipe Nasr and Rio Haryanto set their times on the super-softs in the bottom 11. The Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were roughly 1.5s off Mercedes, with McLaren resuming its position as the best of the rest in seventh and eighth.The two Toro Rossos rounded off the top ten, but with the Williams and Force India drivers yet to set a time on the fastest tyre, their position is likely to come under threat in the next practice session. Valtteri Bottas was the fastest of the two Williams but had a slow spin at the hairpin during the session and ended up 2.693s off the pace on his fastest clean lap. The two Force Indias used the medium tyres to set their fastest times -- both drivers have three sets this weekend -- as they appeared to focus on longer runs during the session.Charles Leclerc returned to Haas for an FP1 outing, finishing the session just 0.3s off teammate Romain Grosjean and ahead of the two Renaults, Nasr and the Manors.
